Default "UNKNOWN PART FITTED" message

I visited a local junkyard yesterday to salvage from a rear-ended XK8 for usable parts. I started the engine to find a multitude of familiar fault messages displayed except this one "UNKNOWN PART FITTED".

Have you come across this message before? Any ideas what could have caused this fault message?

It can be a result of low voltage. But I wonder if it was due to collision damage. When I put a used TCM in my 97 the message came up, but I got rid of it by doing a hard reset. The same thing occurred with a used ABS module.

Did you plug anything from the salvage car into yours? Btw, which vehicle displayed the message yours or the crashed one? I assumed it was yours?

Sounds like the CAN bus and/or SCP is damaged.

Here is some info about modules and the X100/X308.

Hello John,

The message was displayed by the crashed one; thank God, not from mine. I wanted to find out what may have caused the message to appear before buying any part from the crashed one.

The exact warning message should be INCORRECT PART FITTED.

@RJ237: Did you mean you got rid of this message by simply removing the main lead which connects to the positive battery post and shorting that to the battery negative post?

Yes, but that doesn't always work. Some modules will not work unless IDS/SDD or other factory type software is used to configure them to the car. motorcarman has commented on that many times. The best chance to have one plug and play is to match the numbers exactly to the CATS list in the boot near the spare tire.

Even the original control module will sometimes lose the 'memory' and need to be reconfigured to the car if power is disconnected for a long period of time. (capacitors totally discharged?)
I have repaired ABS control modules but left them on a shelf for several years.
When I fitted them to the car the INSTPK displayed INCORRECT PART FITTED until I used WDS/IDS to configure it to the car!!

They needed to configured as NEW.
