Default Unusual Event

My 2000 XK8 has given me all the usual problems over the years - green shower, throttle body, tensioners, brake switch, coil, MAFS, etc. etc. I have now moved on to the really unusual stuff like the loosened harmonic balancer last week.

Today, however is a first for me ever on any automobile. My girlfriend returned to work with a 12 foot streamer of braided fiberglass trailing out of the the exhaust.

It is apparently the resonator packing. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Gotta admit, I've never seen that one before, but at least it wasn't a trail of oil!

My XK8 issues have gone from typical to unusual to, now, simply absurd.

Oddly, no change at all. I'm about to hit the highway for 100 miles, we'll see what happens....

Yup, that's a first for me too! Did it come out easily, or did you have to yank another 6 feet out of it. I can't see HOW IN HAITES that it could actually make its way out of the exaust with the rather limited pressure in our exhaust. Someone stuck it in there...for grins, that's my guess.

Are you sure your GF didn't tie her dog to the car when she went in the store?

I have seen glasspacked mufflers blow the fiberglass out before, but never like this. I saw it happen on my of my friends trucks, his exhaust is simple, short, and loud: long tube headers, short section of pipe, glasspacks, turn down tips. The fiberglass came out in chunks when he revved it and blew onto the ground. I could understand why those blew out since the fiberglass had built in pockets to try to reduce some of the noise, but I didn't think the resonators on our cars were set up like that.

Are you sure it wasn't some packing form a Toyota or Honda's muffler trying to see what it would be like to work in a Jag?
Just a thought.

Got rodents? Perhaps the internal perforated metal deteriorated enough for a little guy to get in there and get some nesting material. Just a WAG.

All the comnents are great. Yes, it pulled out sbout another two feet before snapping off. Parts of it were pure white.

The resonator sounds the same but rattles like it has gravel in it when i hit it. No rust on the outside, the retaining baffle must have rotted away...

Imagine what the guy behind her thought as that came shooting out of the back all Spider Man like...
