Default Valley Hoses

Have decided to remove the intake and replace the valley hoses; this is on a 4.2L engine, so are the two hoses I need: AJ86326 and NNE3946CA? Will also need a set of intake gaskets; is the FelPro set the one to use?

What else? Did a search, but did not find all that much on this repair. I have already replaced the thermostat housing a few years ago.

Does the radiator need to be drained?

I am still having the issue (thought I fixed it, but nope) of the left side upper radiator hose getting sucked-in when the engine completely cools down....which is why I am replacing the valley hoses and having to add coolant every few weeks, so there must be a small leak; valley hoses are the only ones I have not replaced.

If there is a good thread of this repair, please let me know.

Thanks

I always drain the radiator when doing a repair on the cooling system. By draining you can capture the coolant in a bucket. If you just take the hoses off without draining the coolant you will have coolant over your engine and dripping from several points under the car.

I haven't work on any newer than '01 but I assume the '06 is similar. I would purchase the part I show below. It conects the valley hose to the octopus hose and a hose that goes to the TB.
Yours may be OK, but if you tear it down and it is bad it will take you several days to get one. It only cost around $10. I keep a spare in my shop because it delayed me a week on one of my projects.

Check for other leaks and do a pressure test before putting the intake back on. It will save you a lot of work in case there is still a leak.

^^ Yep, replace that lousy plastic T-connector as part of the job. The one in my wife's 2006 XK8 started weeping slightly in early January this year. I found the T-connector on amazon for about $8 and purchased the proper O-ring for it at NAPA for about $1. The NAPA part number is G60248-0010. It is a Gates Hydraulic O-RIng....

I believe a new O-ring for that T-connector comes with a new octopus hose. I bet it does NOT come with new valley hoses.....

Lannyl81,

This too is one of my long term projects on my MY99 XK8 NA 4.0L AJ27 - to complete my part done cooling system overhaul. With the vally hoses, I also plan to change out the part load breather as that's under my intake manifold too. Not sure that's the same on your 4.2L. Just my 0.02c.

Where can I view a diagram that shows the two valley hoses? I can see the one on the right side, where it connects at the front and at the rear, but can only see the rear connection of the hose (onto the "T") on the left side.

Regarding that "T" connector...I did replace that when I did the octopus hose several years ago. And yeah...that does not come with the two valley hoses.

When you remove the manifold you will see the other hose. Do not try to disconnect the Norma fitting, you will destroy it.

I just finished removing the intake on my '02 4.0L. I have a power point presentation (powerpoint 97-2003 version) of the removal steps if you're interested. I don't have it with me today but if you're interested send a PM and I'll forward a copy. It can't hurt.

The front of that hose connects to the 'box' below the thermostat housing on the 4.0L. I suspect it's the same on the 4.2. I don't see anyway to access this end of the hose without removing the intake. It may be possible by removing the Thermostat housing but I've never removed the housing so I can't say for sure. Someone who has replaced the housing will have to advise.

I believe the hose on the right side can be removed & replaced w/out removing the intake but you need to pull a fish line through when you remove the hose. I haven't tried this but I believe it will work. If if doesn't it only takes a few hours to remove the intake.
