Default Is VIN on engine block?

Good afternoon,
I am looking to purchase a used engine for my 2001 XKR and would like to know if I can verify a used engine's milage and origin with a CARFAX report.
  • Where is the engine ID stamped?
  • Is the VIN stamped on the Jaguar's original engine?
Thank you,
Mike

There is no VIN on the engine and other than the original assembly build sheet no relationship between the VIN and engine serial. A dealer can print the vehicle build sheet from the VIN . . . but you have to start with the VIN.

The engine has a serial number that is coded with the date of manufacture at the engine plant . . . not the vehicle assembly. The format is yymmddhhmm.

The ONLY thing you can absolutely verify on a used engine is the precise build date using the decode test point gave you in post #2.

See 'B' for the location of the Engine Number:

Default then there is no way to verify actual miles on a used engine...

So if I understand correctly, there is no way to verify that a particular engine came out of a low milage car. But you could verifiy by dates and options that an engine did NOT come out of a particular car, especially if the engine seller presented a VIN with a build date preceeding the engine build date.
Thank you,
Mike

Any Jaguar Dealer can look up the VIN of a car using the Direct Dealer Warranty system and cross reference the engine number that was originally fitted to it.

I don't think the system is setup to work in reverse to identify the VIN of a car from the engine number.

In general you are correct but I am sure there are examples out there with replacement engines that are newer than the vehicle itself.

This is going to be a problem for me too. My mechanic is awfully slow getting me the data for the 50K (I hope) engine he installed. It will obviously raise the value of my 130+K car, but I must be able to prove it to a prospective buyer. Not sure how that's going to work out.

Default just pulled the RH valve cover...

under the RH valve cover i found both cams broke in two and the bearing caps loose. some stripped out of the block. not sure if I can re-tap for the next size larger diameter bolts and install used cams. I met the hack in Miami who repaired the engine after a timing chain failure, so I guess I better check the LH camshafts also.
not sure where I'm going to find used camshafts, even if I can fix the stripped out bearing cap holes in the head.
I guess this explains why I always had low oil pressure at idle after it warmed up.
