VVT oil control unit seals, not on valve cover

Default VVT oil control unit seals, not on valve cover
So I replaced the split flat seals on the VVT oil control unit and fitted it to VVT unit.
Why did Jaguar use the split flat seals and not o-rings?

also why did my solenoid units not have an o-ring at the top like the pics of new ones online. I fitted one with o-ring for visual.
