Default Warning tone in reverse

2006 XK8 Convertsble

Car in garage top down.

Start car put in R = constant warning tone.

Constant warning tone only in R.

No warning message/fault code displayed

E/brake is off

Cycle the top closed/windows up = cancels warning tone

Drove car to the store. Returning from store, started the car & lowered the top. R = constant warning tone.

What am I missing?

One LOOOG tone is usually the ERROR tone for the reverse parking aid fault,

You should be able to read the DTCs from the module to determine what the module is faulting.
The DTC will be a 'B' code (body-code) so a dealer level diagnostic 'scanner' will be required.

If the LOOONG TONE is present, secure an automotive stethoscope and listen to each sensor closely while the key is in #2 (run) position and car is in reverse. The non functioning one makes no clicking noise. each should be making a clicking noise if ok.

if not completely deaf, one can easily hear the clicking by placing your ear next to your each sensor in turn. No stethoscope needed. If my 70 year old ears can hear the clicks, etc etc etc .

Hearing Range is a spectrum of audible sounds. Happens to be my range at the clicking level is shot. Hearing sound is NOT a 1 shot universal dead spot on all. This is reason the universal hearing aides on E-Bay do not work for everyone.

Perhaps it’s more detailed to advise one to just try to hear the clicking by placing ear up against sensor before sourcing a stethoscope . Not only can it be heard if ones hearing is up to the task, but also can be tactility felt. I can feel the vibrations on my ear, as well on fingers, but not the heavily calloused ones

Many ways to skin a cat.

Been living with this since Day 1 after buying my XK8... it has always been WAY low on the priority list. If you want to curtail the loooong tone, just pop it out of R into N for a moment and back into R: no more tone.

Had this same issue when I first got my '04...I just unplugged the buzzer. Popped the back plate on the center console, found the buzzer and pulled the leads going to it. I had planned to check for BAD backup sensors eventually, but honestly after not having to endure that irritating buzz everytime I threw it in reverse, I just kinda forgot about it.

The fix for the majority of issues is not that difficult. Usually, either the wiring near the sensor has an open or the sensor or sensors have died.

is this a vital system ? Certainly not. But it is nice to have a little warning when backing up too close to an unseen object.
