Default Water pump gasket help

Hi all, I'm stymied. I replaced the water pump on my 2000 XKR and now it leaks at the seal, what am I missing? I have an OEM pump from the dealer - white plastic impeller. The gasket supplied has rubber around the two smaller holes on each side but nothing to seal the large round hole in the center - it's just metal on metal. I don't want to seal it with silicone and I threw away the old pump and gasket before I realized the new one leaked, so I'm not sure how the original sealed the center. I found an o-ring at Rock Auto for a 2000 XKR water pump but I don't see how to use it if that's the solution. I feel really stupid that I can't figure this out on my own but I've had this apart three times now and I'm getting pretty tee'd off as you can imagine.

If you can help, I'd sure appreciate it. Have a happy 4th of July!

You really ought to get around to downloading JTIS. You will find pointers to it in various stickies and faqs.

But, seeing as it is a long weekend:

An O-ring and an aluminum-alloy gasket, seal the ports between the pump and the cylinder banks.
The O-ring goes between the block face and the gasket according to the illustration, and fits into a machined recess.

You might consider ordering a new gasket as well in case not using the ring has made it unusable.

To any one that has done this before,
Do you put the O-ring over the snout of the pump OR into the machined recess in the engine block? I put it into the recess and it still seems to be leaking... I'm pretty torqued that I can't get this simple fix done correctly.

Do you mean the seal around the pulley shaft? In that case, have you considered a defective pump? Yes, it's fresh out of the box, but it wouldn't be the first time. Dry the whole thing off with a hair dryer and watch for where the water is coming from.

The o-ring goes in the recess. The snout is not involved. Jaguar water pumps don't wear nose rings.

My recent water pump had the newer, all metal gasket that has a collapsible ring seal pressed into it. I also fortified it with a thin coat of Hylomar Blue.
No leaks so far.

Is the white plastic impeller an improvement over the original impeller or should you be using a water pump with a metal impeller? Can one of the tech savy members comment.

My pump also came with the newer-type gasket but I used no sealant with it and it started to leak after about two weeks. However, maybe plums is right and its been leaking from the pump somewhere all along. Soooo back to the drawing board...
