Okie dokie...got the scanner from Amazon today, and the code it's reporting is:
P1647-Heated oxygen sensor control module, bank 2 open/shorted

I cleared the code, and the check engine light is now off, of course. I have not driven the Jag yet.

Advice appreciated!

Use Search and save a lot of time.

Change the sensor.

Gee, that's a warm fuzzy reply. Do you assume I might not have spent hours doing exactly that?

What did I do to anger folks here? Over the last 5 years since I bought my XKR I have had nothing but helpful responses when I needed your expertise and advice. I would never have been able to bring it to its current state without that invaluable input. The Jag has run problem-free for a couple of years, so I've not needed to ask for assistance recently.

But on this occasion, I have been ridiculed by some, and given short shrift by most. Why, please? Did I offend?

Your opening post concluded "What advice, besides the need to read the codes, might anyone offer?", so its kind of like you already knew the answer before you asked the question and then didn't want to hear what you already knew. Its like knowing you need to go on a diet and saying to the doctor "My knees hurt, my ankles are swollen, I'm short of breath and my clothes don't fit, but other than losing weight, what advice can you offer?"

Now that you've got the actual code as JagV8 has said, there are plenty of threads on the forum that will help you solve the problem, try starting with this one:-

No offence but it's not possible to tell whether someone does not know Search exists or can't be bothered to use it.

P1647 is VERY common and so all its causes and fixes have been posted many times.
