Well you need to look up the word Nikasil, let me help you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikasil . If that is not enough information the go to my page and if you are not convinced as to the reason why then ask it again or do a search on this and any other jag forum!

Like a XJ model, 2006 or so. My brother runs the cheap gas in it. I thought it needed to run expensive gas!?

You can run what ever type gas that you want to run in your 97. Make sure you read Gus's info and if all of a sudden your car looses compression and runs like crap, come on back here and tell us about it.

Your brother's XJ has metal lined cylinder walls. Your cylinder walls are coated. Cheap gas contains more sulfur than "high priced gas" (they're ALL "high priced") and that eats away the coating on your cylinder walls.

Plus your brother is going to end up paying more than he thinks because he's using more gas due to lack of octane (lower amount of octane) in cheaper gas so his foot is down more than if he was using "high priced" gas to get the same performance.

Octane causes the gas to burn at a higher temp. causing a longer burn during the compression stroke. The lower octane gas flashes (burns) faster and at a lower temp. than the higher octane. As the compression stroke is taking place, the gas enters the hot cylinder and flashes off sooner causing the explosion to take place before it should. This causes knocking (pinging) under loads (going up steep hills, putting your foot into it so you can haul a*s.)

Default Dusting off my mantra

On virtually every car forum I am a member of or just browse, there is at least one time where someone asks "can't I just use the cheaper regular gas instead of premium. . . ?"

Students, pay attention. Say you drive 10,000 miles a year and get about 15 miles per gallon on average. That comes out to 667 gallons of gas--let's say 700. So maybe the difference in price between the regular an premium is maybe $0.35 per gallon. So the net extra cost per year of using premium instead of regular is $245. Compare this against the overall cost of running the car like insurance, basic maintenance, fuel, etc. and you will see how ridiculous it is to worry about needing to save maybe a couple of hundred dollars, particularly if you have a nice high-end or performance-type car.

Class dismissed.

Doug

Not to mention with long term fuel economy loss, injectors will get dirty, clogged, your performance of the car suffers, harder to start perhaps in colder weather, etc. I hate hearing any type of knock...ugggh, like nails on a chalkboard. Then if you want to fix it, you can't just start putting 'good' gas back in, too much accumulation and damage done.

Another thing, that doesn't really apply to modorn Jags, is the posibility of catastrophic detonation. Newer cars have knock sensors to retard timing and keep this from happening, but older vehicles that require high octane might not take to kindly to a wide open throttle run on low octane fuel and reward you by turning the car into a nice paperweight.

Geez, i guess i should quit telling people that its okay to run regular gas as long as youre not an "r" model, (and switch back myself since ive been running reg. In mine a couple others i've had for 9years) have 5 fat friends in the car, tow, or live in hilly or mountainous regions. All gas grades have detergents to keep injectors cleaner, knock sensors listen for even the faintest of sound and retard timing in miliseconds. Gas mileage doesnt improve with premium(proven) unless youre experiancing knock that is causing the knock sensors to retard timing and therefor reduce power and efficiency. But this would really only be under load not cruise, and if youre worried about mileage under load maybe you need a diesel then. The higher the octane(grade) the slower it burns not faster, this is why it resists knock, not to be confused with prignition a totally different beast...i guess im gonna have to come on here now more than every couple months...HEY DOUG WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SMILEYS YOU PROMISED LAST YEAR??????

CRAP, AND I ALMOST FORGOT!!! SULFUR CONTENT IN GAS IS ALMOST NONEXISTANT NOW DAYS EVEN DEISEL THANKYOU EPA AND GREEN PEACE

I hear that Honda Civics, Chevrolet Cobalts, and Toyota Camrys run on "cheap" gasoline. Might I suggest you drive one of these instead?

This reminds me of the time I pulled my Carnival Red XK8 into a parking spot in Pigeon Forge, TN when a new Corvette of a similar color also with the top down pulled into a parking spot near mine. They guy said to me, "Oh, hey, it looks like we have cousins."

My reply was simply, "Not really."

What do you know, brutal lives!!! Good to see ya bud.

If you hit go advanced, and 'more' under the smileys...widen out your little pop up window to the right, we've got all sorts of new smileys. I can't think of anytime to really use most of them, like the village people or that rabbit w/ a pancake on his head.

well if your really insistant on not running cheap pump gas in your Jag(you are at $2.50-$2.75/gallon. And are 1 of the "more is better" types. Why not step up to the REALLY GOOD stuff 108-112 octane unleaded
@ $7.00-$8.00/gallon avail at your regional Rocket brand racing fuel supplier, Sunoco etc...
