Default Wheel/Caliper Questions

Hi All,

I am very soon to be in the position to buy an X100 XKR and I am considering a 4.2 over a 4.0. However, I am keen on some of the earlier wheels which are 18 inch. I might therefore buy a later car in the condition I am looking for and then put, in my opinion more low key, earlier alloys on it.

As far as I can see on the 2001-2003 XKR which I like (before the larger bumpers and side skirts) these come with R branded Jaguar calipers. The question is what is the smallest size wheel that will not foul the later calipers?

Here is a picture of the calipers I frequently see on cars for sale, would 18 inch wheels fit?

You would be rolling the dice with 18s, depending on the rim design itself. The later XKRs (4.2) have brembo brakes and most have 20" rims. Mine has 19" inch Atlas rims on it and they clear the brakes by 1/2 an inch so in theory 18s should be possible but the gap may be so small that it traps road grit. Some more info here:

Wheels from the early STR ought to clear the brakes as those STRs also had brembos - but the offset etc might be wrong.

I would say 18. My XKR has the Hydra 18 inch wheels, and the gap between the brake caliper and the wheel is about 10 cm.

There are a few sets that fit the big Brembo brakes. The 18" Hyfra fit for sure. Confusingly, the 19" Apollo do NOT fit with the Brembo brakes. Backspacing I suppose...

Do you have a specific set in mind?

Hi All,

Thanks for your comments. My favourite wheels are the double 5s, from the link provided by woox4 it seems that they will not clear the calipers on a 4.2 without spacers. Are spacers unwise?
Or should I just decide between an earlier can with the wheels I like or a 4.2 with 6 speed auto box but with bigger wheels...

I am sure in the end whatever I go for I will realise I have been over-thinking this.

Thanks,
Nick
