Wheel paint flaking
I’ve just taken my Montreal wheels off to check the brakes and found a lot of the paint bubbling and flaking, power washed the loose paint and the alloy is oxidised and pitted. Has anyone any idea if there is a treatment for it, like steel rust treatment or a good way to rectify the problem. Many thanks in advance.
Defender,
Best way to fix your problem is to:
Wash the Wheels down....
Steel Wool them until smooth
Prime them
Paint them with BBS matching Paint (You can buy BBS Paint form several Suppliers in England)
Be sure to cover all the SS Steel while Painting!!!!
They will look like new!

Hi Defender99uk,
I had the same problem as you with my Detroits and, unfortunately, recovery is as bcprice36 describes. Your wheels have the Stainless Steel trim rings which complicates the quick sand blast and powder coat fix. A proper job would necessitate disassembly of the trim ring prior to quality restoration work.
Being on UK roads, your corrosion is obviously due to rain water + salt/dirt. But it is now widely known that iron and carbon in the brake dust is the main catalyst that starts the corrosion.
I did read once in a tuners forum that some owners magnetize the disk shields to attract the airborne iron brake dust and thus reduce accumulation on their inner chromed wheels. This is not a practical solution on our Jags because the shields are not easily removable.
As a better prevention that is available, you can purchase Kevlar-ceramic brake pads that emit less dust than the standard pads. Plus, any dust that does settle on your wheel is not corrosive. This is perhaps the best solution for posh wheels in wet environments and, until I get them, I’m driving my Jag in the dry!

Thanks for the reply’s, I’m only doing the insides of the wheels, this is where the damage is worse. The first one I did i rubbed down with various grade of wet n dry, primed, painted and clear coated. But wasn’t happy with the Finnish. The second one I’ve completely stripped the paint off with nitro mors paint stripper, just need to Finnish the prep work before I paint them, hopefully a better Finnish. This is only a temporary job until I can afford to get them done properly
Defender99uk....
Our BBS Wheels are great looking and I think easy to care for.....In addition to the way I described above to Paint them, they also have the Beautiful SS Rings....The problem is with the SS Rings is "Curbs"....They do the job of hitting the Curb and protecting the Wheel! But in the mean time they absorb the HIT, which damages the SS Rings.........I was forced into a Curb causing damage to one of the Rings.....Rather than buying a new $100.00 SS Ring, I bought a small Rasp and a small File. I used the Rasp to cut down the heavy Damage and then the File to smooth-out what the Rasp and File left. Then, I got some Body Sand Paper and smoothed it down even farther and now you can hardly tell it was hit! Sure beats buying a new SS Ring.......

I noticed some flaking paint on one of my wheels. My care is a CPO and is still under warrantee. Is this type of problem covered? If so, do you think they just send the wheel out to get fixed, or do they replace it? Still have 3 years on warrantee so maybe it's better to wait, if it is covered, to see what happens to the other wheels. Thank You.
