Why
Just remembered - the only thing that kills the memory is power loss. Check and wiggle fuse, remove and replug relay(s) and check/wiggle connections to control unit. As tsuppari says it could be a (very) low battery.

I don't suppose that they have an Auto Zone or a Walmart in Bolton Cumbria, but perhaps there is some sort of auto parts place that can run a test on your battery. That should tell you if it is, in fact, the battery that is causing the problem. Good luck, hope it all turns out well for you.

Halfords in the U.K. will test batteries just as Autozone/Advance/Walmart do over here.
Failing battery is probably the culprit, but worth checking as always.
Has the battery ever been changed or still on original Ivor??
If original it owes you nothing and best to change it anyway before she leaves you stranded

Ivor, it does need the right size battery with a vent hole. There is a hole in the top rail that a small plastic connector goes into. No big deal as most BMW and the like have this type of battery.

The code is WW-YY so this one is Week 23 in 2012.
When you disconnect the battery you will lose 'learned' settings. The main one is the window limit switches. To reset them, raise the driver's door window fully and hold the switch until you hear a soft click after a few seconds. Next lower the window and again hold the switch until you hear a soft click. Repeat for the passenger window.

I always find that when the battery becomes suspect it is best just to replace it. Testing seems very dependent on what testing equipment the place has and hasn't always told the whole story for me.
I'd had a few issues with the OEM Jaguar batteries over the winter when my XKR isn't used for long periods. Leaking and cracked batteries. So a few years ago I went to Sam's Club and bought an XGM battery. These do not vent as they are sealed and from what I've read hold a charge better and don't have the tendency for winter problems as the non-sealed batteries did. It's worked wonderfully the past few years.
This was more expensive than a standard battery at around $160 vs under $100 for a regular battery at Sam's Club (not sure they have these in the UK but similar to Costco)

Had this on a Ford Focus a few years back. Engine would crank/start OK but instrument panel lost it's brains and the speedo stopped working. New Battery cured it straight away.
