Default windshield replacement

Hi All. The boss and I are about to start out on our 'round the US "bucket list" adventure and the Jag's (2000 conv't, rain sensor) windscreen has a crack-top middle running down the dark part where the mirror attaches and a couple of inches down from there. My question is can the chain replacement companies handle our baby or is this best left to the dealer?

Sorry just checked with Jag in Detroit and they no longer do windshields.

I did my own, I wouldn't let my local dealer do it. They don't have a very good reputation. I also have replaced many windshields when I owned my body shop. Actually It not difficult. The difficult part is removing the trim. The trim actually snaps on, but if the vehicle has ever had paint work or windshield replacement the installer usually ends up gluing it in. making it impossible to remove without destroying it. Luckily my trim never was glued in. I would talk to the installer and see if he aware of the way the trim is installed, because it is very costly.

I had my X Type replaced at a local glass replacement company. It is just the standard windshield. I don't know if they could replace the XK8 windshield.

My windshield had a rock chip and the AAA national customer service operator said AAA could pay for it with a small deductible. They referred a glass repair shop that ordered the replacement windshield. When it arrived, they looked at it and said it was the wrong one, because I had the rain sensor. The service manager was experienced enough that he reordered to get the correct windshield.

I made sure that he tested the rain sensing with water, both before and after the replacement.

My local Ford dealer replaced my windscreen 2 months ago. Total bill just over $3000. Fortunately, my insurance covered all but the $150 excess.

Was that just for the heated screen only or was there additional for the trim?

The heated screen was about $2000. The other $1000+ was for labour & misc. parts. They had to replace the two black L-shaped pieces of trim and they were about $200 each.

Thanks for the info.

That's £1292 for the screen alone and my insurance glass replacement limit is £750 which I had thought was sufficient.

These heated screens cost a fortune. I had the one in my Transit van replaced about 8 months ago and that was also £1200! The problem is that they're impossible to repair with resin if you get a stone chip because of the tiny filaments which break very easily.

...............and the French do love spreading loose chippings on the roads.

My last XK8 did five trips across France and Italy and the screen looked as if it had been in a war zone. This one got whacked approaching Boulogne at New Year but fortunately the stone bounced off without any damage to the screen.

After you posted the replacement cost in France, I thought I'd check what it would be in the UK. Autoglass wouldn't quote without seeing the car or tell me the base price for the screen.

I'll give my local Jaguar dealer (Stratstone's) a call on Monday and find out what the heated screen itself costs from Jaguar.

Answer from Stratstone (one of the largest UK Jaguar dealers) about heated screen replacement cost in the UK:

"The screen is £629.00 + vat. There is no bonding kit as most dealers sub contract the work which normally costs about £120.00 + vat even on cars in warranty".

Al,

I thought it was right on the limit with mine but insurers have confirmed, as I pay the first £75 on screen replacement, cover is adequate.
