Wondered about swapping an engine from a 99 XJ8 into a 97 XK8, have noticed from the top the difference in vct actuators (is the wiring the same?). What other things might be different?

In short , lots of difference sadly , your XK has an AJ26 engine whereby the XJ has an AJ27 engine , it's doable providing you are willing to swap out loads of parts such as the cylinder heads ,
I'd get a good AJ26 engine preferably from an XK ,
