Default XK8 2000 convertible top question

I was wondering if there is a way to flush the system.....I have no leaks....top is working....however very slow.....I have been told that the fluid gets "thick"

The pump is working fine.....just seems to take forever for the latch above the wind shield to lock down

Is your fluid in the translucent tank green or yellow? If it is green, it should not need to be changed.

Have you checked both your fluid level in the tank to be between the lines and the petcock on the pump to be fully open?

My 1999 xk8 has light green fluid,so you're 2000, probably has green also, which is the better fluid. The latch on my car hesitates before closing also, but I think that is common and expected

I am a little confused.....you mentioned "both" levels? ......and is the petcock open when turned counter-closkwise?

There are two horzontal lines embossed on the center of the tank. The fluid should always be between those two lines.

For normal operation the petcock is turned full CLOCKWISE.

Smile Thank You

To all that commented on the convertible top issue of slow or stalled closing thank you for mentioning the T valve on the pump. I was concerned with this same issue and checked the valve and found the it was not open all the way. It was less than a quarter turn from being full open yet it effected the top closing. I must have contacted teh valve putting my clubs in the trunk.

Thanks again for all your comments they are greatly appreciated!

Tom,

I am a bit confused by your comment.

You say the valve was not "open all the way". It should not be open at all for the top to operate. It should be fully closed. The top will not operate if the valve is open. All of the pressure needed to operate the top will be lost with an open valve.

Also, the valve is on the pump which is behind a solid wall on the right side of the trunk. No way a bag of golf clubs could touch it.

Sorry about the confusion but I meant to say that the valve was not turned to the fully closed position, turning it to tight clock-wise. My top pump on my 2002 is mounted on the top of the cd changer that is on the passenger side of the trunk. The material covering the entire side is flexible and bends easily to remove it from covering the cd changer and pump. If you push on it from the inside of the trunk it will flex.

I just installed the resistor fix for the convertible top. I now notice that when the top is raised that it slows down to almost a stop as it reaches the latch then after a slight hesitation it latches. This operation appears to be normal from all the articles I have read on this topic. It would appear that the two fixes that are out there do about the same thing in reducing the peak pressure when latching. The relief valve, I think, would be the better fix, but the voltage drop resistor appears to also work . Has any real specs, on the peak pressure, with the addition of the resistor ever been verified?

Thanks Steve, I was just wading through the hydraulic pressure threads looking for that!

My view of measurement results and user experience found here ...

I'll forgo what seems to me a given.
