XK8 Bonnet (Hood) Removal and Refitting
The bonnet (hood) of my Sapphire Blue 1996 XK8 has badly discoloured and flat paint - secondhand bonnets (hoods) in the right colour are available, so I’m wondering if removing the old one and fitting another would be cheaper than a repaint.
Bonnet (hood) removal/refitting isn’t covered in my official WSM. What is the procedure?

The procedure is in JTIS (see attached).
Getting a perfect match without painting won't be straightforward. Even with the identical paint code, weathering over the years will have affected the donor vehicle differently to your own.

A proper repaint of the hood would include blending into the front fenders. Otherwise it will always be noticeable. In the US it would cost about $500-$700 if no rust/dent repair was needed.
As for your original question: There are three hex heads in each side at the front. After popping the struts off, have a couple of helpers hold the bonnet vertical while you remove the fasteners. When replacing get them all started and just tighten one each side, then gently lower to check the gap.
I have done a R/R working alone by propping the bonnet open just far enough to reach the screws, then place a heavy blanket across the fenders and slide it off with more padding on the floor to catch the front edge.

Thank you for the information RJ - nice to know it can be done working solo.
The majority of opinion is is will be cheaper to get a repaint.

Yes, but I wonder if they can match the paint that well. From what I have seen, single panel repaints are very difficult, especially with metallics. If you have access to a replacement bonnet and can compare it to your fenders, it might not be that bad.
Thanks again RJ - one Jaguar breaker yard not too far from me would be happy for me to visit them to view the XK8 bonnet (hood) they have in stock in what appears to be Sapphire Blue.
Nothing to lose and you could be lucky.
I found both my 2001 and 2005 XK8's needed the front bumper and bonnet repainting every two years because of stone chips. My 2007 XK survived unmarked for four years but my current XK already has some gravel rash after a fast 5000 miles across France and Spain.
If you plan on keeping the car for a few years, finding a good local bodyshop will be the only long term cost effective solution to perfect paint unless you plan on emulating Racediagnostic's skills.
