Default XK8 flip key compatibility

If I buy a flip key from EBAY or other source, what is involved in making it campatible with my 2006 XK8?

i just had a new flip key cut for my XKR yesterday. the rib of the key is longer on the XKR key than standard, so they had to use a longer blade.

i believe the ones sold on Ebay have the shorter ribs...ask seller to give measurements so you can make sure it matches the length of your key...

(chrome sided case is XKR key, rubber case is my XType Sport key) Front and side views...

I think they need the car to program the key so it will work...and the original key, which they clone, so you end up with your original and a new flip key...The hardest part is finding a locksmith who will cut your Jaguar key...

I don't know, I just gave them my money, they provided new cut key, flip fob, and programmed for me. $250

Check out this old thread if you want to convert your key and remote to a flip-style. I did it to one of my keys a couple of years ago and it has worked fine since.

This method requires no dealer or locksmith cutting of the key blank or reprogramming to the car, since it uses your existing working key and code module.

I can claim no credit for the conversion technique. I was simply one of several owners who used the detailed information and pictures provided by the original poster in that thread, Pomosv. I had two keys, so wasn't too worried about damaging the transponder...but I did the conversion to just one key! A soldering gun worked well to cut the key by melting and expose the transponder for extraction without damage.
