Welcome to the forums Jon,
It is exactly the right place to post the question.
There's two 10 amp fuses protect the ignition coils in the 1998 XK8 and both are located in the LH engine compartment fusebox:
Fuse #14: HO2S heaters (where fillted), EGR valve (where fitted), ignition coils relay, throttle motor relay, AC compressor clutch relay
Fuse #18: ignition coils supply
Which one is blowing?

Jon,
I never had any problems with the security sounder on either of my XK8's but I recall other members have posted about issues with it. As you've now identified the problem is not ignition coil related (the thread title), I recommend starting a new "Security Sounder" thread with the relevant checks you've carried out so far. This will attract the attention of members with relevant experience.

OK, you have at least some form of a spark if it's trying.
Has the car been standing for some time until now?
Do you have fuel pressure at the valve on the fuel rail? There's a schrader valve (mine is covered with a blue cap) at the front of the engine on the LHS fuel rail. You will see it if you remove the LHS engine cover. If you turn the ignition on for a few seconds and then off, you should get a good spurt of fuel out by depressing the valve. Cover with a rag or something to stop it spraying everywhere.
See this thread by member Johnken for pictures of where to look, and further information:

Ecch. Likely the fuel pump has gone bad - they need to be exercised regularly. Unfortunately, its replacement isn't particularly easy on the ragtops. It may be a small consolation that a member not too far from you is going through similar pain:

Very slim chance it's a blocked fuel filter, but...
Do you hear the pump run for 2 seconds or so when the ignition is turned on?

Not sure to be honest will get someone to look at it tomorrow thanks for your help on this I will check both the pump and failing that the filter tomorrow will read the other thread
Just grabbed the neighbor turned ignition on and they was like a click / whirr from the boot only for about a second if that when I crank there is a sstrong smell of petrol in the boot
Like Michaelh pointed out, the whir may be the fuel pump pressurizing. A fuel filter costs a couple of dollars, 20 minutes to install. WTH, change yours, pray its solid. I hope you get lucky!
This wouldn't have anything to do with the smell as far as I know, but 1 thing at a time.

If the filter is blocked it won't do any good to either the pump you have now or any replacement.
Do the easy stuff first
and report back.
Good luck!
