XK8 Steps aside for an E-Type
We took a trip up to our local race track this morning, Knockhill, just 20 mins away from where we live to have some fun in an E-type.
4.2l straight 6 series 1.




Am I over taking that Ferrari or the other way round.

It was great fun but the E-Type handling was very scary, it made the XK8 feel like it had fantastic handling for the first time on the way home.

Had an E-type some years back and it's easy to forget how much better modern cars perform than their ancestors, even when they were top performers in their day. Would still own another if I could afford today's prices.

I was racing these two but didn't come out on top.

The longest skidmarks recorded on a public road were 290 m (950 ft) long and were left by a Jaguar car involved in an accident on the M1 near Luton, Bedfordshire, UK, on 30 June 1960. Evidence given in the subsequent High Court case Hurlock v. Inglis et al. indicated a speed "in excess of 100 mph before the application of the brakes".
I recall reading in another account that this was an XKE but the XKE's first production year was 1961. Might have been an early release or a prototype.

Having had a series 1 E type in 1966 which I entered in many autocrosses, I have some experience in E type handling. They understeer badly at low speeds but high lateral acceleration (really front heavy). They also lift like crazy at high speeds. Anyone who says he knows his E type will go 150 is lying, if you look down at the speedo at over 120, you will likely die from going off road! By the way, this red E type is not a series 1, it is a 4.2, at least 1964. Series 1 were 3.8. In fact, the long drivers window smacks of a 2+2.
That sounds right from the appearance. You can always quickly spot a series 1, which is 1962-1963....they have a textured metal-faced guage panel and console top instead of the vinyl covered ones on later models. The give away on the 2+2 is the chrome flash on the door panel.
That and the high, ungainly greenhouse from the B-pillar and back.
The two-seat FHC was much better proportioned. IMHO.

As for how fast this one went, well Kim asked me that as soon as I got out but I had to say that I forgot to look, I was concentrating too much on the rev counter and the track.

I agree about the series 1 FHC, beautiful proportions. I still think the 06 XKR coupe is a proper relative of this car. I am very fortunate to have owned both.
Mine is at home today keeping the 05 XJ8 company because it has a booboo front air spring and its nose is on the pavement. I can't get the XKR out past it. I think these things stick together.
