It's the A drum, failed at the snap ring land. Hope to get the updated drum with the dimples. Clutches look good even with 80K miles on them. Theses transmissions are built to last (except for the A drums). The entire chain of post are probably a good way to quickly get to an A drum failure diagnosis. I would do the entire testing from the TCM connector next time. . .
Buying a bug sprayer to use for pumping in the new fluid, when I put it back in this weekend. I'm going back with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF (meets the ESSO spec), and doing a fluid change every 20K miles for the rest of this baby's life.

How big of a job is it to replace an A-drum in these transmissions? I've never rebuilt a transmission before. Would it make more sense just to replace the whole tranny with a junkyard one?

Glad you resolved the transmission issue remosusa. don't know what an A-drum is, but snapping at the ringland sounds bad.

Would have loved pics, but this will have to do as an archive to searches of the same error code you pulled.

Now, go easy on it for awhile, would ya?

Hey, I'm going through the exact same thing, wondering about a resolution and the cost involved? Thanks in advance!

You are attaching your message to a eight year old thread and the poster is probably long gone.

If you open a new thread and describe your problem it will be viewed by more members.

This is the typical transmission failure mode for the 5 speed transmission. It's thought to be caused by a bad valve body which causes hard shifting and trashes the A drum. Here is the recommended resolution.
