Default XK8 vs XJ8 transmission swap or XK8 transmission repair

Will a European XJ8 4.0 transmission from 1997 - 99 (or at least 98) fit? Or even a 3.2 with Sport button? XK8 as parts cars are rare as hen's teeth here.

Alternatively what will an overhaul by a reputable specialist (in UK) cost? I will remove and refit the transmission myself.

Finally, one guy did it himself without the special ZF tools. He did use some tricks he said. Is there anybody on here who have done it? (I have downloaded the repair manual but not gone through it yet.) I do pretty much everything on my cars short of cylinder boring and crankshaft balancing (takes rather expensive equipment).

Anybody got experience with the ZF5HP24 overhaul kits sold?

I don't know about 3.2 V8 cars but all ZF 5HP24 gearboxes are compatible in 4.0 cars here in North America.

I have a 1998 X308 gearbox in my wife's 2000 X308 and I have a 1999 X308 gearbox in my 1998 X100.
No problem mixing and matching.

What's actually wrong with yours? I did A drum and a few other bits in my shed with no issues and no special tools.

P1722, slipping and the dreaded clunk when engaging D.

I have recently had a "better gearbox " - 55,000k miles, fitted..it still has minor problems, but much less, It is smoother amd quieter at 80K less miles!! ..So started looking at it, and turns out to have the ending 28(my daughters eyes are far better than mine!)
So it seems I have one from a XJ8 3.2..works fine aside from an occaisional clonk in first, after a sudden stop, then starting off..However knowing it has 1 less clutch worries me slightly..Yes I do not expect 100K miles from it, doing 3k miles a year, but thoughts on whether will it take the extra torque and for how long?
Lastly, assuming it has a very small crack in the upper valve block, causing the clonk, I have bought a remanufactured valve block unit from China, after many discussions about spec etc. So I am so far impressed, just need someone to put it in, as I am nervous about putting it in!

Good to hear, I was given to understand the 25 and then 26 was fitted to later 4.0 litre cars as well. The part number seem to bear this out. The key difference is the Sport mode capability compared to standard 3.2 without Sport mode.

Ah interesting I am not so bothered about sport mode, very rare track day machine..as she is geting on in years!!
But I will check the sport mode, maybe it is a badly obcsured 26 not 28 , fingers crossed...
My only worry was that apparently the 3.2 was built wth less clutches, so not so strong?
Anyone know?
Aside from the rare clonk it is lovely, if nursed off from go, after a sudden stop!
