Default XKR Engine - Are there two different ones?

I was just looking at one site that showed two different VIN numbers for the engines. In other words in doing a search there for an engine for my jag, they showed two different ones with differing VIN numbers. So I need to know this as I'm having to replace mine.

Thanks for your help and most awesome knowledge.

Debbie

There are 4.0 and 4.2 engines, I beleive that mid 2002 was the changeover date.
I'm sure the experts will correct me if I'm wrong.

From our own xk8-xkr FAQ page...

There is no direct correlation between the engine serial number (date of engine assembly) and the VIN although a dealer can provide the engine number from the VIN.
If you're engine shopping, find a serial number after that and avoid the tensioner issue altogether in the replacement. G'luck!

I believe you are correct with the date, but the 4.2s are considered 2003 models.

Actually recently we had a member buy a 2002 XK8 with a 4.0 engine in it. And when he checked the tensioners he found the latest configuration that was supposed to be only in the 4.2 engine. What a lucky guy. So, I think there may not be a positive change over date for anything. Probably wrong but the 4.0 with latest cam chains was a surprise to everyone.

I would try for a '01 - '03 XKR or '01 - '04 XJR engine. Within those Model Years all engines should work although details like tensioners may have evolved and may need updating. You really want to avoid trying to convert a normally aspired engine.

What VIN ranges are you seeing in your search?

I'd actually avoid the 99-02 years.

With 97-98 you won't have a convertible top latch hydraulic hose failure. You will need to make sure you have the latest tensioners. Post-2002, you won't have the tensioner issue. Those 99-02's will have both issues.
