Default XKR passenger door central locking failure

Hi, my passenger door fails to lock from the key fob, resulting in the driver door locking/unlocking its self a few times before the alarm sounds, if I manually lock the passenger door the driver door locks ok with the fob, however when I unlock, the passenger door remains locked and the driver door mechanism activates a few times. I can hear a click from the passenger door, so suspect there is a relay in there that is working, I assume there is some kind of motor to operate the lck mechanism and that has failed.

Any experience with similar problem?

Thanks.

I would think it may be stuck however, check the fuse in the passenger side fuse box first.

If that is ok then you may have to take the door card off and get inside to look at the linkages and the mechanism.

The self cycling of the door latch is usually symptomatic of a microswitch failure in the latch mechanism.

I had these same symptoms a couple of months ago. Solved it with a complete cleaning of the door latch mechanism parts. See this thread:

Cleaning can often give an extra lease of life to a failing Door Latch Micro Switch but, given the low cost of a replacement against the time required to remove and refit the Door Latch again when it does fail, I'd go for a replacement Micro Switch.

Check Reverend Sam's video for the procedure:

I now have no central locking on either door, checked fuses, is it likely to be a switch failure on both doors or anything else I should look for ?

Thanks.

Hi Steely,
What exactly have you done in trying to fix this. Have you replaced or tested any switches?.

Nothing yet, I was going to remove the passenger door panel and lock mechanism at the weekend, today the drivers door stopped working too but since posting earlier, I disconnected the battery, with the idea to start looking at the door panel, but decided it is a weekend job after all, after reconnecting the battery the drivers central locking is working again!
Could a bad battery have stopped the central locking working? I have no issues starting the car, so I have no reason to suspect it.
Does the central locking cancel out after a certain time due to the passenger door failure ?
I will get workong on the passenger door on Saturday.

Before you rip it all apart, it will not hurt to fully charge the battery and give it one more try.

You may well have to get into the door and remove the mechanism to test the switches.

These cars do act up in the strangest of ways with even the slightest drop in voltage from the battery.

You certainly won't lose anything by charging it anyway.

I can't find any evidence of the battery being replaced in the last 5 years, so could well be a battery issue, will get on it. Thanks.

If you have an OE Jaguar Varta battery fitted, the manufacturing date is stamped into the top of the negative post.

(click on the photo to enlarge it)

The code is WW-YY for Week number and Year. Mine is 23-12 for the first Week in May 2012.

On my last four Jaguars, the batteries have needed replacing at between five and six years old. With weird electrical faults on these vehicles, always eliminate battery charge and condition before assuming component failure.

Also a hard reset or two should always be tried with a known good, fully charged battery before trying any other repair for a problem like this.

What do you mean by a hard reset ? Will removing the battery suffice ?

The hard reset is achieved by disconnecting the battery leads and holding them together for about 15 to 20 secs.

Effectively discharging the capacitors in the system and wiping the memory.

The same is achieved by disconnecting the battery and allowing the capacitors to discharge naturally.
