Hi Everyone.

I am thinking of buying my first Jaguar and was wondered which was the best on fuel consumption, S Type or X Type? I want a diesel saloon and live in Cornwall so there's a lot of uphill and down dale driving.
Many thanks in advance

hi Janner i don't think they do a S-type diesel but it is a heavier car than the X-type so you will get better mpg with the X i'd go for the 2.2 better torque for the hills

Diesel S-Type is 2.7.

Due to all the extra costs, no diesel is worth buying any more unless you do a LOT of miles. Which say around 12K miles a year, Richard Hammond says 18K.

I'd drive both, and having done that buy an S-Type. (A petrol, unless you do the high miles.)

Default Re-MPG

Hi Guys
Thanks for your replies.
I am thinking outside the box i.e. over the year. I only do a 30 miles round trip to work (mostly dual carriageway) but also travel to Hull (400 miles each way) 2-3 times the year so am after an all rounder.
I have heard that the X-Type is a better car on fuel than the S-Type but was just asking all you Jag experts out there for their opinions.
Thank you all
Janner

Janner....My US spec 3.0 automatic petrol X Type gets 24mpg on the highway(not imperial gallons) and around 16 mpg around town. Diesel fuel around where I live costs much more than petrol. It kind of negates the bump in fuel mileage. I love the AWD, because a quarter of our year it is raining white stuff. I do love driving my doctors S Type though after I service it....Be cool.....Mike

Default mpg

Hi janner, I also live in cornwall make trips to grantham 2-3 times a year. Tried x type petrol. But for what I do I got myself the 2.2 diesel, seems good on fuel (35ish to the gallon more when I go north) if you go diesel I would recommend the 2.2

The tax bite is less on the oil-burner, too, isn't it?

I don't do diesels ( I have owned them ) for low milage . Maybe OK for more than 12,000 miles pa. Petrol is cheap at the moment & my 2.5 petrol X type gets 25--35 mpg ( IMP ) . Petrol ...pay at the pumps. Diesel pay mech , to keep the smelly , oily ,noisey, cancer causing lump running. Diesels are best left in big rigs & Locomotives .
