Default XFR/XFRS guys, how often do you change differential oil?

I know we got the e-diff but isn't it still the center diffs locking mechanically signaled by the electronic? I wonder if the change interval has to be similar to that of viscous diffs around 7-8k km.

Safe to say that most-all Jags with E-Diff's are still runing their factory oil in there.

It's not a scheduled maintenance item from Jaguar, just like the transmission "sealed for life" (sealed for the warranty period more like it)

You might want to contact GKN in the UK (the OEM for the diff) and ask them their opinion on diff oil changes.

Although the sythetic I use is the best and probably could last forever (Redline shock proof light weight gear oil), I do mine every 2 years.

Don't fall for that fill for life. If you drain it out at 50K miles and compare to new diff oil, you will be sad you didn't change it sooner.

Mechanical locking works a lot during the winter (I can hear and feel it) so my guess is that it should be treated as a normal viscous locking differential. If it were the torsen type, I wouldn't worry about it though (which I doubt, the unit is from the same company as the F10 M5).

No. The correct term is it is not needed because it's a "Lifetime" service interval. Nothing wrong with changing it as was posted above.

It's a "Lifetime" fill but who's lifetime? You decide.

I agree......sort of.

Although my XF is 7 years old, it has only 30,000 miles on it. Last year, when I read the posts about contaminated gear oil tearing up differentials, I immediately changed the oil in my XF's diff, and like "Bigg Will", I went with RedLine's oil.

The reason I waited so long is twofold.....I'm a long-time GM owner, and to the best of my knowledge, General Motors uses some sort of moly based set-up/break-in lubricant in their diffs, which turns the gear oil dark grey, in a short period of time. Whether or not this alters the life of the gear oil, I don't know, but it sure doesn't look healthy.

What I've done in the past, is change the axle oil after 1 year and 2 years of driving, which pretty much "cleans up" the inside of the differential. After that, assuming I still have the vehicle, I'll change it one more time, around the 4 year mark, and after that, at least in my observation, the oil stays pretty clean, so I'm in no big hurry to change it again.

The second reason I didn't jump on changing the XF's gear oil, is based on my past Jaguar experience, where I've drained the diff after a couple of years (we don't put a lot of mileage on our cars), only to be draining out clean oil. As I said, after hearing about the diff issues, due to contaminated oil, I got on it immediately. In fact, I dumped the OE gear oil, refilled it with RedLine oil, drove the car around for about 20 minutes, and then changed it again, just to be safe.

Official BMW F10 M5 Break In Service Checklist

Will post a link to break-in service checklist for F10 M5, which clearly states differential fluid to be changed after the first 3,000km. Jaguar XFR uses the essentially the same unit as F10 M5.

Below is the information regarding GKN differential used in both BMW and Jag.

Just a head's up... I have 75k miles on my XFR and just had the differential oil changed. It was MUD! ... replaced with Redline 75w90 Gear oil.
