Default 2005 XJ Vanden Plas 'Transmission Fault"

I have a 2005 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas, the car has 107000 miles. It started having little issues
changing gears, when i got home i noticed a puddle of fluid where i park the car, then when i moved it i noticed another puddle of fluid where i had it parked, when i tried to move the car into the garage it had no power at all. Checked it after about an hour and now has the "transmission fault" light on. Could it be that the transmission has gone? all happened in one day, Please help!!!!!

Trannys cannot work without fluid, apart from the gerbox lubing, the torque converter needs it to make the coupling from engine to gearbox. So if you have no fluid it may well not drive. You need the fluid level checking out asap. BTW there is no dipstick, only a level plug underneath the car. Its a real PITA to check !

Thsi does sound like low fluid, you obviously need a leak repair done. These trannys can develop leaks in both the cooling hoses and the seals on the pan and electronics sleeve. Unless you are really adept and have a lift, you will need to have the car flat bedded to a knowledgable repair place. They will need to know how to check fluid level on a ZF 6HP26 tranny. Make sure they understand you, 1 in 50 places will know what to do. The fluid is specialized (ZF Lifeguard 6) and the level is measured at a set fluid temp (40 deg C)

Just a feed back so i got the car towed to my local mechanic here in Dallas on Merell Street, so they looked at it and they said it was a transmission line at the bottom of the car that was leaking the transmission fluid. They just replaced part of the hose, for only $300, This was a great relief i was so worried. Thank you all for your help!

Default 2006 XJ8 Van denPlas

I recently ran over a piece of log in the road as I crested a hill. Couldn't see it until I was right on it. It hung under the car for a short distance and then it dislodged. After about 10 miles, the transmission started slipping when stopping and starting. I got it back to the house. Now when I turn the key on I get a transmission fault.

From reading posts, looks like I will have to have it towed or flatbedded to a repair shop. NO Jaguar dealer in my city . Any suggestions?

In that instance, the version of the zf 6hp26 is brutally flawed by a plastic sump pan...I can see a piece of wood cracking it..

They may not be thrilled, but many other dealerships can handle the 6hp26 for issues not relating to the mechatronic.....is there a BMW dealer closer? I know they used 6hp26 a lot

Maybe, maybe not. Thin aluminium-alloy castings usually have even LESS tolerance for that sort of impact than the uber-plastics. Kevlar does a fine job of stopping fast-moving pointy objects, f'rinstance.

Sheet steel gives, but it, too can be bent 'too far', also split, be pierced, or simply distorted enough to no longer seal at the gasket line.

If regularly operating where any of that is likely to be an issue, get thee to an off-roader supply and have a custom skid-plate made and fitted.

Photos wanted of that, of course... and we'll understand if you leave the canvas cover on the ring-mount Dash gun in the sunroof opening..

call the BMW dealer first. They may not be thrilled about the idea, but they are 100% capable of doing the work.....you'll just need a compassionate and creative service writer

Called the BMW dealer - they don't want to touch it..... but I did call my auto insurance yesterday and this should be covered by my collision insurance. $500 deductible, but at least that makes me feel a little better!

Virginia has some of the best-kept roads in America. But the whole national infrastructure is deteriorating, so hazards similar to what was once the province of 'off road' are increasing with each passing year - both as to metal debris and broken pavement.

'Custom skid plate' doesn't have to be of the sort of armour-plate wanted for going rock-bonking in a jacked-up Jeep. 2 mm stainless would take up minimal space, add very little mass, stop most nasties well-enough.

This is the second such story I've found on this - 6HP26 transmission pans cracking easily. The previous owner of my car had is replaced at the dealer, part costing him about $500. But I've seen the same one online for $119. From the pictures it looked aluminum:

Transmission Pan - Auto Parts Warehouse

Perhaps this was an upgraded part?

Crumbling infrastructure.... hm...wasn't somebody promising to fix all of that back around 2008 or so-?

Could be. Could also be sheet-steel. Not sure I'd even care so long as it fit well and did the job properly.

Missed that. More than one kind of 'crumbling infrastructure', so could have been mental masturbation, intellectual incest, or some combination thereof.

No real-world movement visible anyway - not even just ten or twenty miles outside the Capitfool / Kaputtvoll Beltway.
