Default Keys

I have a quote from the dealer $350 (cut and programmed).
I have a quote from SNG Barratt
$100 (blank)
Going to check out the lock smith next. Understand they can do a cloned key.

I checked in the Metro New york area and was told only the dealer could do it. I have a 97 xk8. Anyone in my area have a suggestion. Quote was over $300 from dealer.

I have a mobile guy, charges me £40..... Any locksmith can cut a key which will gain you entry its having a key with a transponder fitted and coded that costs, only takes seconds to do but the gadget to do it is what puts the price up........

Is there not a way to programme it in the car. I had a range rover with a blank key there was a trick to programme the blank key with the car it worked like a charm. Dealer was charging $350 for it. After the pan rover forum i found out there was a very simple way to get the key programmed with the car as long as you had 1 original key.

I bought two (2) uncut new transponder equipped master keys on eBay for $20.41 w/shipping but have yet to get them cut. That I will do on an upcoming trip to Tampa. I programmed the keys, I hope successfully, using the British Diagnostics IDS-SDD-WDS software and cable (v130.)

Not every locksmith can cut these keys as it takes an entirely different cutting machine and I'm told they're very expensive and there aren't enough cars using them yet to justify the cost. I figure if I can get them cut for $50 each I'll have done O.K. as the Jag dealers in Florida are all quoting $100 to cut and another $100 to $150 to program.

I went through the same process. The best key shop in town said they didn't have the machine to cut the keys. Had to go to a Jag dealer for the key and programming. My dealer is a 400 mile round trip!

Depending on your exact location, it looks like Mobile would be your nearest dealership.

I just saw your post today. When I took my 97 to the dealer the cost of a new key was $45. They told me the early US cars did not have a chip. You might want to double check on that. A locksmith can tell whether or not you have a chip.

I never realized how lucky I was to receive THREE keys, plus a green Valet key, with my 1998 - especially since I am the fourth owner.
