Disconnecting main engine wiring connector

Disconnecting main engine wiring connector
Hi all.
I'm chasing down the dreaded 'battery not charging' error. I have 14.4v at the battery with the engine running and both the instrument and the voltage gauge both show an error. I understand they are wired separately. I've checked there's 14v coming from the instrument connector on the alternator (that was fiddly I can tell you) and there is just a few millivolts at the Major Instrument Cluster. If I carefully put battery voltage on that pin the error goes away.
So I want to look at the big mother connector on the engine side of the firewall, behind the throttle body. It's hard to get to and looks surrounded by clips and it's bolted together.
Do I need to take off the throttle body or just undo the two 10mm bolts? Any other advice very welcome.
Cheers.
Paul.

It depends on how much flesh you are willing to lose. I personally would remove the throttlebody, then remove the 2 10mm bolts holding the plug to the bellhousing. They are buggers to even get to. Bring the plug up, as high as you can, and remove the bolt holding the plug together. Depending on if you are wanting to win a concours, I would just bolt the plug back together, when you are done, and hang it for future pin diagnosis. That is what I did to mine, and I had the trans leaning down, to unbolt those 2 little bolts, that hold it. I know I am going to be attacked for this method, but with 2 trips to S Carolina, and one trip to Arizona, from the outskirts of Chicago, I had NO problems......Be cool.....Mike

Hi loops,
If you haven't got into the job yet, you might try the other connector that the signal wire passes through after the one on the bulkhead:- it's EM1 (pin 14).
The 1997 wiring diagram shows the locations (snippet attached). There doesn't appear to be anything earlier, and it's dated October 1996.
I'm with MrP on removing the TB. I remember the big connector you're seeking to remove as it's yet another item in the way of the octopus hose, and it is buried...
Might save you some skin

The wee snippet I attached says:
EM1 20-WAY MULTILOCK 070 / WHITE: ENGINE COMPARTMENT / ADJACENT TO RIGHT HAND ENCLOSURE
not shouting - it's all in caps.
I take that to mean somewhere near the compartment containing the brake master cylinder on our RHD cars. I'll take a look when I get home later.

Mmmm. I can't find the %&^$* thing either. I'd best step back here and let someone with practical experience chime in. Too easy to sit in a chair and quote from the diagram..
I did a google and came up with this old thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-switch-82482/ where RJ237 had a cruise control issue, and claims to have found the location of this elusive connector, so might be worth giving him a knock and see if he remembers. I'd like to know too as on re-reading the diagram, it says location/access, so for all I know it could be under the scuttle.
BTW, Note that Jaguar has thrown a curved ball:- from the 1997 manual:
"
Note: Early production vehicles (--> VIN 3300) have connector pin numbers that differ from the volume production pin numbers shown. Use the wire color code for pin identification on early production vehicles
"
So beware:- it looks like they made it up as they went along on the early cars
I will pull the car outside and take another look tomorrow as it's bugging me now..
Best,
Mike
