Default 6 inch speakers no sound

Yesterday i was listening to the radio at about half volume when all four door speakers quit. All other speakers including the door tweeters work fine. I checked every fuse in the car but all were good. Everything else on the car works normally. The prior owner installed an aftermarket sattelite radio, so I will be tracking those wires tomorrow to see if he hacked into the harness somewhere.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Kurt

Well I found the problem. Apparently the wires for the speaker cones were soldered with acid core solder. All eight wires were corroded and green where they were soldered. I cut them back slightly and re-soldered all the connections, now all are working well.

Apparently, even with only one or two working, it sounded good enough to fool me into thinking they were all working. Either my hearing is really bad (it's not) or they did a good job designing the system.

Was the soldering OEM? Or did the previous owner do it?

It was oem. The car lives in Florida so I can't blame it on salt corrosion. Nothing else looked corroded in the door.

Thanks for the post! I'm suffering the same issue with my 2000 xjr and I didn't know where to begin the troubleshoot. Let you know how it turns out...

matt, i look forward to hearing your experience. My two right drivers (or mids) aren't playing anything, and I'm really hoping it's an inexpensive fix

Checked the door speaker connections, which looked fine... No corrosion or sketchy connections. Read elsewhere on the forum that a faulty power amp might be to blame so I picked up a replacement on eBay fo $100. Swapped it out and still nothing. Only sound is coming from the tweeters and the occasional cut in from the sub. I'm baffled! Thinking of enlisting the help of one of those... What are they called... Professionals? Anyone have any other ideas to try?

If the door tweeters are working, there has to be a signal to each door as the 6 inch speakers and tweeters are fed from a single twisted pair. I would try connecting a cheap working speaker in. No need to get the right plug, just strip back the wires for the cheap speaker and push them into the car plug.
If you still don't get sound, you will have to follow the wire back to where the lines split for the 6 inch and the tweeters. I didn't need to look that far so I can't tell you where in the door to find the connection. Keep us posted.
