XJ8 Aftermarket Stereo Installation
#41
I attached the volt meter to the last amp on the left. I found that that one hit the low power warning before anything else. The capacitor is usually a little higher in charge than the amps. The amp on the right is a 6-channel, but has less output power than the amp on the left that i use for the subwoofers. The head unit also has some kind of internal amp gain so I was able to turn it all the way up to 40 out of 50 to tune it. That head unit puts out great sound. I can turn it up to 45 with no distortion for most music and I can go to 50 on Operas. I can also disable or reduce the power of the internal amp gain on the head unit.
I highly recommend this unit. The only thing I don't like is the time it takes to read the iPod and DVD at startup.

check out this thread theTruth, it should answer all your questions. Since you don't have your car's details in your signature, but I did see in your profile you have an x308 XJ. I'm not familiar with your OEM setup, unfortunately, so not sure if these will help.

I know this may be a stupid question but is there a way to install an aftermarket single DIN without having to bypass the factory amp? I want to install a basic mp3 usb player without having to run all new wires to each speaker. I have installed radios in other vehicles before. Never had one with a factory amp like this Jag tho. 1998 Jaguar xjr with premium sound.

Hi Morgai1,
Hadn't noticed this thread before now. I really like your installation, very well executed!
I have had a small project in mind for a while, to make an iPad holder for our X351 XJ. I had however abandoned the idea, as I have been unable to find leather that matches the interior closely enough to my liking.
You mentioned that you had sourced some "Jaguar Original Leather". If you don't mind me asking, would you be able to tell me where you sourced it from?
Thanks,
Peregrine

Just to add my two cents, here's what I did. I have the Kenwood head unit and a Pioneer DSP, both fitting within the stock opening, which is not quite 2-Din. They fit very snug, to the point that I had to do it without the dressing frames. The DSP is an awesome unit with many special features.
Of course, this system is different in that absolutely everything stock came off and replaced. There are some more trunk components here in my gallery.
And this here below, is how I did my previous Jag, a 1998 XJ8L. Similar install.

Interesting...
Did the bottom unit fit into the original single din hole? I'm assuming the DSP was very shallow, I have a control unit for my Alpine processor that's similar.
I would still prefer to fit a double din screen in there, and (try to) make it look reasonably original, but I'm guessing you're not complaining, given how much better it must sound than the factory unit, and how easily you can connect usb/mp3 players etc

More than the radio itself, it is the DSP, the amps and the speakers what contribute the most to the sound improvement.

If you can get/have the faceplate fabricated and ready install, I can texture it and blacken it for you to match the rest of the controls at no charge. I still have all paints in my garage. You just need to get it to me and cover postage out.
I wouldn't want to make it for you (or my shop) unless you plan on doing the exact same thing that i did - recess the JVC unit. Otherwise, it may be too much of an opening for a standard radio.
Let me know, here to help if you need it.
