Unhappy towing eye RESOLVED

This is an old topic. I'm trying to find a reasonable priced tow eye for my 2004 xkr . None are with the car therefore I do not know the correct size to get. I've checked e-bay (confused). Is there a place to get the threads of the bolt hole confirmed for size and whether it is left or right-hand thread metric or standard coarse. Thanks in advance. Perhaps someone has found a machine shop alternative.
Richard

Why not get in touch with Motorcarman (Bob Gauff)?

Talking Update - Resolved

Over the past month I have looked in some hardware and box stores, Canadian tire ,Lowes, Walmart etc. Today I just got back from shopping around again. Thanks Norri for the quick response. It happens I got lucky at a Brofasco bolt and rigging supplier. He allowed me to try out different lifting eyes on my Jag in the parking lot. The second try was an M20 Din 580 Lifting/towing Eye ...stronger grade than Jag eye (cost 20.00cdn). It fits like a charm. Be advised that the bumper cover is very fragile and lots of dollars to replace . It comes off easily...push up from bottom and pull straight out from rear. Caution ..Attached to the cover are two long 4" flimsy plastic clips that should not be forced but eased from their little square hole in the rear of the bumper cavity. When reinstalling the cover feed these in first then push the cover up into the upper tab opening then push toward bumper to clip in the lower tabs.

That's odd, according to Bob's info in the link your 2004 should have a 16mm left hand thread. I'll have to look at mine.

Stevenx605, My 2004XKR is a USA import to Canada

Orange spare - yes.

I also purchased a rubber stopper for the eye-bolt hole at Lowes (about 2 bucks). Oiled the hole and stuffed in the stopper.

Richard.

Hi Rich,
What is the length of thread on your tow hook also I have looked through the owners manual and cannot find any reference about jacking instructions............ Is there a separate booklet about such. Thanks Steve

I'm pretty sure it is in the handbook for the standard jack, if you are using a trolley jack check out Reverend Sam's video in the XK8/R "How To" section.

Jacking on roadside is in section 6 of handbook. Sam's video is jacking with trolley jack and jack stands. At non Jaguar repair places be observant of where they lift your car.(Not all of them know the various jack points)
My eyebolt has threads about 1 and 1/4 inches length from tip to shoulders of bolt. When used it must be screwed all way in til it stops or you may strip the hole or bolt.

Hi Rich,
I have located a lift/hook at McMaster.com to your specs for about $ 18.00 US, also for anyone else who may need one. I am in need of the door handle black rubber gasket between door shell and handle assy and front lower black plastic (cover, shield, splash guard) under radiator. Is this dealer stuff only or are there some other reasonable sources out there, new of coarse. Steve

Red face

A few days ago Stevenx605 brought to my attention that the M20 Din 580 Lifting/towing Eye fit our 2004 xkr jags on the rear ...no problem. On the front tow hole, however, there is a problem... the eye shoulders are too wide for the tunnel-like molding around the bolt hole. I therefore went to a machine shop and had them make an extension using a rod coupler nut and piece of m20 coarse threaded rod. The coupling nut is hex m20 coarse thread about 5.5cm long and the rod is about 15cm. long. This solves that for an extra 40 bucks. Also a tip: It may be that the rod and coupler should be welded together or a locking nut added in order to extract the bolt from the hole in the car more easily. My extension rod stuck in the hole and was hard to get a grip on it ...might mess up the threads using grips to release it. On the rear of the car the extension is not required.

Default Cheaper Mazda CX7 Tow Hook for 2001 XKR with M20 Threads

Looking at this thread, I figured out my 2001 XKR had an M20 (20MM) thread size, but was uncertain of the thread spacing, There are 3 sizes when you look them up (2.5, 2.0 & 1.5MM). I measured the spacing on mine at 2.5MM, so the thread size is M20 X 2.5 for the 2001 XKR tow hook.

On Ebay, I found a seller with an '07 Mazda Tow Hook for $10.00 plus $6.95 shipping via Priority Mail. I contacted the seller and he confirmed the M20 X 2.5 thread size. The hook has a long neck and does not interfere with the plastic under the bumper. It has a bright color and looks good.

Screwing in the Mazda hook by hand stopped after about 2 turns, so with a little oil and some leverage, it went in all the way. It was dirty threads on the Jag.

Here is one search I did on Ebay looking for tow hooks: (07 08 09 10 Mazda CX-7 CX7- Bumper Tow Hook Eye). There are other tow hooks that are interchangeable.
