I'm trying to strip down my 70 motor myself and looking for some tips. I already have the head removed and am on to the cylinder head studs. Im trying to reduce the height of the motor before I pull it out from under the car.

!. What is the thread size on the studs?

2.Is the bottom thread right through the water jacket and the lower block?

3. My engine is seized and the studs appear quite corroded. In the event I snap or strip a stud on the bottom end is there a procedure to correct it?

4. Any removal tips are appreciated!!!

 

With the long stud engines you must be VERY careful when removing the studs as they can corrode badly above where they screw into the bottom of the block. It is not unknown for the corrosion to be so bad that the stud snaps off leaving a small stub at the bottom. However, there is a core plug by each stud and normally, these would be removed for inspection and clearing of crud. At the same time each stud can be examined for corrosion. If bad then use of anti-seize oil can help in extracting a stud. When I removed mine, corrosion was present, but not bad enough to cause a breakage. When I got mine all out on the engine of my 1980 XJ6, I vacuumed out the stud holes, then got a friend with access to a shop, to make up a thread clearance tool using a plug-tap. I replaced all the studs with no problems then.

 

Thanks for the advice. What method / tool did you use to remove your studs? I will be putting new studs in.

 

grasp the stud near the block deck , TRY to titen the stud a WEE BIT, this should break the rusty grasp of being where they have been for over 50 years!!!Remove the core plugs, as an access to soak the base thread with penetrating fluid- allow to sit overnite.If one breaks, it is a machine shop job to remove, but you are going to re-bore anyway.
