Default 18MY+ Rear View Mirror Removal/Swap

Hello everyone, I just picked up an OEM frameless rear view mirror with auto dim/and garage door opener.

My 18MY has the non frameless, auto dim, but no garage door openers…and that’s always bugged me..I know, dumb problem to have.

Does anyone know how these plastic covers are removed, all the searches I did show the old covers with a center seam…mine does not look like that…I’m presuming they just pop off..but was hoping someone has experience before I start prying…thanks!

I can't help with the cover removal, but I would love to see a few pictures of the OEM frameless mirror. Perhaps a link to where you purchased it? I'm betting the frameless has a much nicer, and low profile, appearance that also improves visibility a least a little bit.

Well mine is an eBay/parts car special…new they are almost $700 and it didn’t bug me that much lol. It does have a larger area of view, but not sure it will improve visibility/blind spots any …I’ll let you know once I get it put on…hoping all goes well!

I swapped my mirror to the frameless and about a year ago. the plastic cover should separate into 2 in the middle by squeezing or you can try using a plastic pry tool to disengage the little hook keeping the 2 pcs together, its really simple.
FYI, you will no longer have the auto high beam feature if you switch to the frameless mirror because of the electronics (auto high beam and auto dimming) there's only 1 harness and connector that plugs to the motherboard behind mirror which no longer has a seperate mini board plug for the auto high beams camera unlike the original mirror which has has to has 2 seperate harnesses and 2 separate circuit boards for the auto high beam camera and the auto dimming. I chose asthetics over function and gave up the auto high beam feature and kept the frameless mirror.
note, you will need to swap the metal brackets that holds the stem the round ball sits into (the bracket which holds the round ball, it how the mirror stays in place when adjustion a pacticular position) because the metal bracket on the frameless mirror is not compatible with the windshield mount and wont fully slide and lock into into it. you separate the mirror stem from the metal bracket by firmly folding untilt he round ball pops out of socket of metal bracket and you do same with your original mirror and once mirrors are off, mate the frameless mirror with the metal bracket from the original mirror by gently pushing the round ball into the bracket socket until its securely snapped in and its ready to go back on the windshield.
here's some images on how remove the cover

My wife has the frameless on her F Pace and it is really nice. But you're right, I wouldn't spend $700, but it does look and feel like a much higher quality piece.

Our F is the wife's car.

If it didn't have the Homelink mirror controls, I'd be the one getting out and opening the garage.

Thanks again everyone, mirror went on easy peasy. Didn’t have to swap any base. I did lose the auto high beam, but I never even had it turned on in the settings. Happy to have garage door opener built in along with the frameless look…still not as slick as my previous RCF’s frameless mirror that had hidden LEDs that would show if the door was opening or closing…lol but I’m super happy to have remedied one of the options that wasn’t checked when the previous owner purchased new

Question for y'all. It seems that every frameless mirror that I find on ebay says the same thing for F-Types: F TYPE 2018 - 2018 (automatic dimming), thru VIN K49804, w/garage door opener.
My VIN ends with K50118. Will I be ok with this part? Does anyone know/have experience with this? I have an 18 Fype 400 sport coupe. I really want to get rid of the thick boy rear view that came with my coupe.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I can not speak on the VIN number specifics. The one I purchased had come off an actual F-Type. However, it does look exactly like the one I have based on all the eBay pictures (connector included). Just remember that you will loose your auto high beams, if your car is so equipped. At that price I’d say give it a shot, you can always return it…Sorry I know that’s not much help.

Thanks for replying. I don't have high beams on my 400, so yeah, worth a shot. F Pace and F Type have identical-looking rear views. I saw some ebay auctions where they came off the F Type and virtually no difference. The VIN had me pause though. But Ebay claims that it fits my 2018 as per their system.

Thanks to all for this helpful thread. Picked up a frameless mirror on eBay that came off a wrecked 2019 XE for $90 and installed it in my 2018 400 sport coupe yesterday. The toughest part was definitely putting the rear cover (one touching the windshield in the back) on. But it is done and I am loving the new modern look without the extra thick bezels. Just a heads up, the Jaguar dealer parts department said that it wouldn't fit cuz it came out of a different model. This isn't true. JLR uses the same mirror between Discovery, XE, F-Type, etc. The connector plugged right in with no issues.

Stock mirror

The "meat". As others instructed, just twist counterclockwise to take off.

Ta-da!

Sorry to hijack an old thread but has anyone tried to install one of the newer frameless mirrors on an older (2017) car? I'm wondering what would prevent installation and if I can possibly DIY it in.

Thanks

What's your purpose for installing the mirror.
If its cosmetic go for it. If it is to get Homelink then don't. Just buy a homekit enabled garage door trigger and just ask Siri when you get close.(yes , I am too lazy to press a button !!) I'm guess android auto would have something similar.

Yep entirely cosmetic from my point of view. My existing thick-bezel mirror already has Homelink but I really like the look of the frameless mirror.

Does the frameless mirror have a smaller "footprint" than the thick-bezel mirror? At times it seems like the TB mirror can block ~1/3 of the view out of the windshield.
Not worried about homelink or the auto dimming functions. Would just like to see better.

pretty sure the footprint is the same, my car did not come with the home link mirror, so I figured if I was going to install one, may as well go with the frameless one. Love mine, but wouldn’t have done it just to get the frameless look if mine had the home link to begin with.
