Default 2017 front car windshield ....

Hi guys,
The 17 MY F Type has some kind of Infrared proof glass for the 2017 model car. Why? What useful purpose does it serve. As far as I'm concerned, it's a complete annoyance when going through EZPASS Toll. I have to hold the transponder up against the roof glass and only then does the EZPASS system detect my transponder unit.
Does anyone know why Jaguar made the front glass so radio signals can't penetrate through the glass.
What's up with that ....
Thanks

It's Solar attenuating glass, it filters the Sun's UV Rays. My Range Rover sport has it and there's a cut-out behind the Rear view Mirror for ez-passes etc. There should be a cut out somewhere on the F-Type but I wouldn't know because ours is a '16.

Am I wrong for saying that the UV ray blocking windshield is stupid because what about UV rays penetrating through the roof glass and the side windows. So what's the point, I don't understand.

It filters (reflects) the IR frequency, not UV, to help prevent the cabin cooking itself in hot climates. It's largely done for fuel consumption as less energy is wasted keeping the cabin stable so it will eventually trickle down to be standard in every market. (Figures of 4% are commonly used.)

I don't know which glass in the F Type is coated with the reflective film, but on some cars it will be all the windows (front, side, rear and top) with antenna placed externally.

UVB and UVC is filtered by most glass by nature of their smaller wavelength, and they are the biggest risk factors for causing sunburn and related skin cancer (UVC would need to be from a man-made source as the ozone layer filters it from our sun). UVA is mostly filtered out, but the longer wave length still allows some to get through. That is why the plastics on your dash are angled or shaded by leather trims to stop them fading. UVA can accelerate skin aging and cause sunburn, but as there is a lot less energy it takes a lot longer to be harmful.

Still, I agree that the inconvenience caused makes me wonder about the sanity of this. Sensors and radar detectors are important to many of us. I am glad I ended up with a 2016.

Is this standard on US spec cars? Still seems like an option in the UK. Although to be honest im kinda glad, seems like it causes more problems than its worth.

as previously mentioned, a lot of us suffer from this.

the EZpass is not as big of a deal because you can just call them up and they can provide you a license plate mounted transponder.

the BIGGER issue is radar detectors. it makes them completely useless! my XFR doesnt have any useable cutouts for my radar detector. it makes me feel like an 18 yr old ******** without a condom

Escort Passport 9500ci solves the problem for a price.

The other choice is to move to Germany

We use the SunPass in Florida and ours is a credit card sized sticker. There is an area with black dots and even the solid black around the base of the rear view mirror. That spot works for me as I have not have not seen a pay by plate charges on my account.

If your using the bulkier devices that that be to tight.

Had this glass on our 2012 Evoque. Living in the land of EZ Pass, it was a pain in the ***. Had to old the transponder out of the window to get it to register (there was no cutout section back then).

The alternative was to mount a compact EZ Pass transponder in the front grille. Sold the car before we ever got around to that.

UV degrades plastics in the interior. UV blocking windshield will extend your interior life by a great deal.

This was already discussed in the OP's last thread about the same exact thing.

are you 100% sure about this? My XFR has the electric heated windshield, and so far the only things ive seen are having to get an externally mounted system

The 9500ci is externally mounted, at the grille, under the hood.

Has anyone quantified the loss of range on radar detector? Has anyone been successful in mounting one in the "hole" by the mirror. I have an escort 360 and would love successful mounting suggestions to take advantage of the referenced 'window' in the coating.

I noticed it always came with the HUD on the XEs I looked at. We have it on our XE, which has a HUD

I can quantify it. 100%.

I can drive by a patrol car and my detector won't go off until I'm passed it and the radar is coming in the back window.

Can't get it high enough to use the toll transponder spot due to the rake of the windshield.

Thanks Nati! Looks like my son will be the proud recipient of an almost new Escort Max 360 for his Audi!
