Default '22 F-Type R--Elite care service--Rear Diff Drain/Fill

Good afternoon all,
My '22 F-Type just turned 2 years old and dropped it off this morning for the Elite care annual service. The service manager called and he fumbled around trying to tell me that they were having trouble with the rear differential drain and fill. Apparently, there is a connection point on the body for the cross-member that supports the rear diff. They normally have to loosen that cross-member to access the diff to drain and fill. Unfortunately, that connection point involves a nut on the back side that should be welded in-place so the bolt tightens--but, you guessed it, that nut has "broken loose" so they can't fasten the cross-member and they cannot access the backside of that connection point to reattach the nut. He said they were unsure of what to do, but had a bunch of calls out to JLR for options. Anybody run into this before?

Yes, I think that was reported once here. Finding the thread could be a challenge, and I don’t recall the solution.

Here’s a thread that discusses this issue, but with the transfer case rather than diff. You won’t like the solution…

Thank you DJS for tracking that prior thread down for me. Yes, that is, unfortunately, exactly my issue, and I absolutely was wrong in my own post; Transfer case--not differential which is the first thing that came to my mind. You are also correct that I don't like the solution one bit.
Lastly, learned some new terminology: "captive nut" which is now synonymous with "anxiety" for me.

I guess the ‘good’ news is that your car is under warranty, and it was the dealer that broke it.

Indeed, better that it happened now and not post-warranty. I'll update this thread when the dealer gets back to me with the details.

Thanks again!!

You’re welcome. FYI, I’m a native of South Haven and have friends and family in Kazoo.

Thanks DMeister! I did see, but very much appreciate you taking the time to send it. I'll keep everyone posted with what Jaguar intends on doing.

Hey Kalamazoo, Sorry to read of your troubles. I'm assuming, (due to proximity) that you took your '22 to the Grand Rapids Dealer for the warranty work. My 2019 is approaching 44K on the clock (out of warranty) and was going to get the tranny and transfer case oil changed in the very near future, but now I'm a little bit scared. I've used the GR Dealership for previous warranty service on the Jag (and my Mini) and always found them more than reasonably competent compared to the Detroit Jag Dealers. How do you feel about that? I'm in Saginaw, but just bought a condo in St Joseph, MI and will be dual house-holding until spring of '25. Unless I find a competent Indy shop in the area, I'll end up back at the dealer.

Hey DJS,

Awesome! Have you been back to S. Haven lately? Been a great summer for the beach. I grew up in Detroit, but my wife is from this side of the state, so we ended up in Cooper Twp (north of Kzoo). Small world indeed!

Cheers!

Yup, my mom is still there, I do 2-3 trips a year. I’ll be there again with the F-type in a few weeks. My mom grew up in Bay City, so I spent some time there as a kid.

HI Paul,
Actually, we have a Jaguar dealer in little old Kalamazoo that's been around for many years. It is owned by a much larger family dealer that sells/services Chevrolet and Toyota, so it's able to survive in a relatively small market. I have always had great personalized service there. The Jaguar service manager's name is Jeff Van Orsdol. Kalamazoo would be much closer to St. Joe than GR. That said, I have never had any exposure to the GR dealer so I cannot give a fair comparison--only that I wouldn't hesitate to use the Kalamazoo dealer. Let me know how you end up with your service--whichever one you choose.

BTW, one of best beaches on Lake Michigan is in St. Joe. Great area.

Cheers!

Hey DJS,

Just noticed you're in Boston. I used to travel for work to Boston 1 week out of every 5 for about 2 years. Unfortunately the entire time was during the "Big dig" (way back in the early 90s)...so I grew to hate it. Literally mounds of dirt everywhere you looked and the traffic was ridiculous. But, a beautiful part of the country and country's history to be sure.

KalamazooJag, I appreciate the heads-up on the Kazoo Jag Dealer. Yes, its much closer and I'd probably would choose them over GR with your good words and the shorter drive. I still have to go to the GR Dealer, but only because they also warrant my wife's Mini Cooper, and would do the service on my beemer also. Hell, maybe one of these days we could have a gathering of the West-coast MI F-type owners, including DJS when he's in the area. The Porsche 928 group I used to hang with from the Detroit area would gather once or twice a year and it was always enjoyable.

I’m assuming you guys have been to the Gilmore Museum? Probably the best auto museum I’ve been to.

DJS, I've not been there yet although I've heard great things about it and I believe its been a meeting spot for countless automotive groups over the years. I'm a slowly retiring (fighting it every day) fine dining restaurant owner in Saginaw with grandkids a half-hour south of St. Joseph. Thats why we bought a new crib in St. Joe. Spent a few days in South Haven with two other couples the week before last just to get away and enjoyed it also.
