I'm US based and ready to buy a pre owned F Type. I have a budget of around $35k which limits me to the earlier models and/or examples with higher mileage. Some questions I have:
1) Are there certain years that I should prefer over others?
2) Is there a sweet spot with the different engine offerings?
3) Any other gotchas I should be aware of as I look for my specific car?
I'll be coming to the F Type from a 2002 Porsche Boxster that I'm giving up on after 137k miles. Looking for something a bit more "refined", modern, and hopefully a little more reliable.
I'm in the same boat. Missed out on 4 good ones this summer, and had a near miss this week with one that might be a disaster. Good luck in finding the one for you!
1) Are there certain years that I should prefer over others?
2014 is all convertibles and all RWD. 2015 started having coupes and offered AWD. 2016+ AWD was standard. I wouldn't say any year is "better" than another, just slightly changing features and some cosmetic changes and what not.
2) Is there a sweet spot with the different engine offerings?
Not really. Everyone prefers a different thing. It can be noted that the power difference between the base V6 versus the v6s or 400 sport is just an engine tune. Same can be said with the V8S vs V8R vs SVR.
3) Any other gotchas I should be aware of as I look for my specific car?
Look for weeping differentials (especially in the R model) and be wary of the plastic cooling crossover pipes. The crossover pipe issue is a lot harder to visually inspect as it is hidden underneath the supercharger. Give the forum a search for this issue as it is super well documented.
I picked my 2023 with 7k miles up from CARMAX. I can't believe how clean it is & it still has 3+ years OEM Warranty. I personally would not own one out of warranty & if you buy used from CARMAX you can add their warranty which will take care of any worries. Especially with all the issues Jaguar is having at the moment as they are losing money like crazy. Doug D the popular Youtuber did it decades ago bought a LR & added the CM warranty that help start his YT career. Never thought I would buy this way as I am very OCD with my cars.
I purchased a 2016 RWD base model in March and don't regret it at all, it had 88k miles and included the premium and vision options. Pickings for f-types is slim here and I was thrilled to find one in a price range I allowed myself for a weekend 'fun' car. If anything I wished I'd have found a S version with adaptive suspension and locking diff, but I'm 70 so I don't push her that hard anyway. Pull the brochures for various model years off the web so you'll understand the many option packages that were available. Enjoy the hunt!
Best budget another 10k to fix whatever the previous owner broke. And what will break when fixing that:
Case in point 17 Ftype S 35k Miles, 30k USD. Old plastic pipes. So we go to change those pipes. left front timing chain cover leaking oil onto the AC condenser. To do it right and not end up with a valve gasket leak ya do both timing chain covers and valve gaskets. While in for that ya do the spark plugs and take out the injectors and clean - thankfully none broke in the process and none were stuck in the block. Then. All of a sudden the radiator started leaking and my purge valve went bad..... God help me it ended up not being cheap at TAALLLLL....

One additional factor I should have mentioned is that this car will be my daily driver on a 30 mile round-trip commute that includes freeway as well as stop and go traffic. Is the V8 going to be annoying in this scenario?
I also have a mild concern that I might **** off the neighbors when I leave for work every morning at 7:30 a.m, not sure if the V8 can be started quietly and babied out of the driveway? 🤣

Flag on the play. Lol. 🇻🇬
Any current Jaguar is having has absolutely nothing to do with someone buying a pre-owned car.

Small correction. RWD was available for the V6 well past 2016 and with the V8 in late models.
Great color and love the license plate. Price is high, with some gaps in maintenance in recent years. I’d have a Jaguar dealer or independent shop that specializes in Jaguar do a thorough presale inspection. Close look at coolant pipes and all the regular stuff. It’s an early car, I believe, so there may be bugs that were worked out on later production units. Overall, could be a deal at $25K but unless it gets a perfect bill of health I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

SUPER helpful, thanks so much for the second opinion!
I own and have owned my 2016 R AWD for over 5 years and love the car. Really no issues with it during that time. I will upgrade the coolant pipes and water pump soon just to be safe but most of the work you can do on your own if you know much about cars. And sadly for us current owners, you should have no issue finding a really nice, decent mileage one for that price range. My 2016 is loaded and again the R model with only 30k and probably not worth much more than your budget and there is NO WAY in hell I would sell mine for that going rate. They are an amazing vehicle for their sticker price and an insane buy with the current used prices if you buy the properly maintained car.
Great car and under appreciated in the sports car market. I always get compliments when I pull Up. I'm actually JUST RECENTLY placing my 2014 F-type S convertible for sale if interested. Garage kept with 42,500 miles. Just tuned up 3 months ago. Give me a thread back if interested
I am located in Long Island NY

How much are you asking and where is it listed at ?
Listed on Autotrader last week, $28,900. I'm located in Blue Point NY. I can send whatever pics. Just recently spent $1300 on tune up, plugs filters. I put 3,000 miles on it in past 3 yrs. Winters it is garage kept. This pic is from Carvana, post, still looks the same
The pic I just posted is from garage, the first pic was a Carvana pic. Car is metallic Gray with black top, brown leather seats. Has all the bells and whistles. Everything works, type S, 380 hp motor. The only reason I'm selling is every 3 yrs I usually purchase something different. Before this I had a 650 BMW convertible and before that MB convertible, and so on.
After lots of research ( ummming and ahhhhing ) I'm about to pull the trigger on this car. Any final alarm bells I should be aware of based on the carfax report? The high(er) mileage concerns me a little bit, but as someone who will put ~6000 miles a year on it, maybe it's not that big of a deal. Thanks again for all the help along this exciting journey!
Hate to be a downer, but price + accident + spotty maintenance records make me declare this a “pass.” I think you would be better served to continue the hunt a bit longer.
