V6, Coupe. I'm open to base or S, but there does seem to be a lot more base's available. Can anyone comment on the changes in the infotainment system over the years?

All the same from launch until MY18. Then it gets a graphical refresh but still slow and limited in functionality. MY19.5 has the latest hardware and can be upgraded to the latest software to support Apple CarPlay and android auto. MY20 is ready to go from day 1.

Wait, it's been the same until MY18? I just read on another thread that theres two versions of the infotainment just for MY16, and then in MY17 in changed? Sooo confused.

If I decide to go new, then I'd do 19.5 for CarPlay. But I'm really trying to not splurge too much so I want to sort out which infotainment system I'd be fine with. I just rented a 2017 base coupe the other day, and while it wasn't 'good' by any means, it was fine. But is MY16 or MY15 going to be worse?

Yes there is two in the '16 year, and to make it harder they both look the same (with the 4 tiles). The 16.5MY is the new version 9before the new new version), the 16MY is just the old black and white version with a different appearance. I havent tried it in the F Type, but I had the black and white one in an XF and hated it with a passion.

Here is a thread that set it out https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...inment-198845/

If you're buying it for the infotainment system, get a different car. All of the versions on this car are adequate after the appropriate updates are applied, but not remarkable. The engine sound is the real entertainment.

The fixation with having the latest versions of the infotainment or should I say, the distraction systems, is self-defeating since they are outdated virtually before they appear in the cars (any cars). Drivers should concentrate on driving, and car manufacturers should emphasize responsible driving and minimize the distractions available. Jaguar's traditional practice of having redundant buttons for instant application is the right thing - any car that requires use of the touch screen to alter frequently used functions (climate control, radio/cd...) is simply dangerous (especially if the car in question were as potent as an F-Type. Real trouble, really fast). Any fiddling with the touch screen requires taking your eyes off the road, and that is not good.

I’m not bothered much by the infotainment system, it’s just that I want to know what version I used when I drove the base 2017 coupe, as I’ve read *many* posts on here saying older infotainment systems are driving people nuts from how slow and laggy they are.

Understood...but I suspect that the people driven crazy by "slow and laggy" infotainment systems (which does not describe any F-Type system in my experience...it is all relative) are people who look on automobiles as mobile I-Pads rather than as AUTOMOBILES, among which the F-Type, any F-Type, holds an elevated status. A Kia may well have a faster infotainment system...but ....

I'm sorry, but your suspicion is not accurate. I was driven crazy by the first gen F Type system (in my second XF) to the point it contributed to a quick turnaround (1 year against 2 years average ownership). I had the opportunity to buy an R for the same price as my newer S but took the S because I knew I wouldnt keep the R with that old system, whereas I was happy with the new system from my wife's XE. I dont use tech for much beyond USB (music), phone (business/wife), occasional Nav, and reverse camera. There are plenty of functions I dont use. I dont look at cars as mobile iPads, I've never owned an iPad. I have now had my F Type for over 3 years, only the second car that has achieved that longevity in 20 years plus. The infotainment is satisfactory, not good, the stereo sound in particular is quite average. But it does me fine, which the first gen infotainment wouldnt. People who want a reverse camera that comes on straight away, decent sound, and an uncluttered screen arent all tech-boffins, some are just impatient and would like the best of both worlds, like me.

I will add I suppose for context that the first gen F Type system (which I had in my second XF) was a lot laggier and with a crappier interface than the system in my previous XF. So when I got the car I was expecting something better, not worse and that contributed to my dislike as no-one likes going backward in anything. Had I not gone backwards, I might not have noticed it as much as essentially I wouldnt have known what I was missing.
