Yes, it looks very similar to what's shown in the pdf. I don't know if it's available or even applicable to CA's toll-collection system, but I would think they might have something similar perhaps?
Thanks! Looks like I'll need to place a call with the CA EZPass office soon.
I keep mine in the glovebox. The plate reader makes sure I get charged even if the transponder doesn't get picked up. I used to put it the map case on my motorcycle tank bag in plain sight and it wouldn't get picked up, but they never missed charging me. I completely stopped worrying about it.
+1. I do the same foy the Jaguar and the Harley. Since the plates are registered they charge my account.
On almost the entire East Coast, states have standardized on the EZ-Pass system, which relies entirely upon the transponders. Without a transponder signal, you'll get a fine in the mail.
On the West Coast Bay Area, our system does it through the transponder, but also license plate algorithms that cross reference cars to accounts, so when a transponder fails or doesn't go off (or is in the glove box), they don't waste paper send out bills that are erroneous and need to be retracted due to being legit accounts.
So the question becomes this: if your license plate is properly on file, do you even need the transponder out, ever (unless you are parking at the airport and need to tap it to open the gate)???

For you diminutive and lovely East Coasters... look at this *$#&*!!! Image Viewer
That thing has got to be 5"x4" or something. I have one that is maybe 4.5" by 3.5", and I think that is our smallest.
I venture out occasionally onto MD toll roads without a transponder and have not yet been fined. The charge just ends up on the bill a bit later than usual with the plate number rather than the transponder number. Penalties are quite severe if a plate number is not associated with a valid EZPass account.

Thanks for the clarification. I asked about that a few years ago, and I either received bad info, or else their policies have changed.
Lol look how big ours is, however. Long as a knife, nearly thick as a half bottle of wine. Assume you can post this on the rear is ugly as it will look?
Here is mine mounted to the left of the Mirror. Works great and is not visible from the outside.
Inside it looks like it is a part of the car, and make it very symetric to the box (not shure what that box is?) to the right side of the Mirror. It's original white, but I painted it black:
I tried to get one from NY EZpass a few years ago, and they told me my car had to be on a list of cars that they'd do this for, or prove that my windshield mounted one would not function. I didn't expend any energy trying to convince them of their flawed logic, so stuck with the windshield brick. They're probably more reasonable these days....
Yeah, it was/is probably designed to be mounted on a front license plate, but I have hidden them different places in nooks and crannies in front or under front of cars. I drive from PA to NC regularly, and D.C. and NYC, including express lanes - it always reads. In fact I had an occasional non-read years ago with Interior bricks, but never with the hidden external ones. Disclaimer: I suppose non-reads could happen to you, and I am sure they would say you should mount on your license plate or your forehead or whatever, but hiding it works great.
Hey jm717,
Just got my R and am looking at doing the same setup you showed in the picture. Quick question: how did you mount it? Looks to be a pretty tight compartment so not sure how you would drill something in. Thanks in advance!
