A fun drive through the countryside turned bad yesterday when I struck a large pothole with my RF wheel. The outer bead and wheel center look to be fine, but the inner wheel hoop and bead are visibly bent as shown in the second photo. I don't have any experience with alloy wheel repair shops to know if this wheel can be repaired or needs to be replaced. Anyone with experience have any suggestions?
We had wheels repaired from New England pot hole damage on a previous BMW.
It was relatively inexpensive.
I would get a repair quote before buying new.
I've had a bent wheel repaired. It wasn't very expensive and I never had any issues after the repair. I could also not see any evidence of damage after the reapir.
Usually $200 per rim for small damage like yours, most places charge by size, replacement is around $600 refurbished, more than 1k from dealer.
It you Don’t plan on changing the whole set, go for the repair, it won’t be exactly like new(trueness, strength and balance) but a good shop will make it not noticeable to your butt dyno.
Thanks for the replies and encouragement to explore a repair. I found a shop locally that was able to completely refurbish the wheel (eliminate the bend and clean up some minor curb rash) for $165. Looks really good, and that price includes dismount of the tire, repair, re-mount tire, and balance.
For anyone else in the Indianapolis area - I recommend Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists on NE side of Indy. I dropped off the wheel at 3:30 yesterday afternoon and picked it up at 10:00 this morning. It's a big operation that looks like they service dealerships, repair shops, etc. in the greater Indy area.
Didn't know you were in Indy. I used them to paint some rims years back. I had paint issues (flaking) and they repaired them for free, even years later. Great company to work with.
Thanks much! The reason I ask is every car with alloy rims I have owned got bent rims for what ever reason.
My 2014 XJR has forged rims from the factory and with 56K miles and several massive pothole hits I still have no damage.
This is my first set of forged alloys and they do seem to be much stronger/tougher and more resistant to road damage.
