Ok for the past couple of weeks I’ve been doing my due diligence to find the best tune for the R. I’m making this thread as a reference point for any new owners like myself looking to get straight to it.
Based on everyone’s experience in this forum, who provides the best tune for our cars? I’ve seen several people recommend velocity ap but the results are abysmal in my opinion. Why would pay $1,000+ to gain 1 or 2 mph in the 1/4 mile?

 

The best tune is OEM one unless you are building a dedicated track or drag strip car. Make sure you understand downsides of tuning. if you are going to tune your daily-driver F-type.

 

There is no "BEST" tune, everything is a compromise. The best tune is the tune that gives you the comfort of risk vs. reward. For me it's OEM, but I have had tunes in the past with minor issues.

The harder you go, the more risk you get.

 

I think your perspective has been clouded by previous car ownership. The F-type platform is not one that allows power increases in the hundreds with only a few bolt on mods like the BMW or Audi power plants can support. A half second in the quarter mile is nothing to scoff at for a couple grand in this vehicle. It’s a low production volume vehicle and thus doesn’t attract the level of aftermarket support of more popular models.

As far as tunes go... the F-type requires a lot of specialty tools and software to correctly tune. There are only a couple tuners out there who’ve forked over the cash to develop a tune properly, and to be honest, outside of Velocity AP, I don’t know who’s invested the money to do it properly and who’s taking short cuts.

You’d be a fool to ignore Velocity AP just because you don’t like the results. They’re right in line with every other tuner’s HP/TQ claim, and are the only ones actively on this forum providing honest information and data to support their product. At one point VAP spent thousands developing headers for the F-Type, and when they finally tested the things, didn’t find the results worth while and scrapped the entire project. They could have sold it to you anyways with some false claims you’d probably never notice, but instead they were honest and up front about what they found, and took the loss. Good luck getting that kind of dedication out of any other company offering tunes.

 

lol if you're really looking for something more and your not happy with whats available to improve your times why not just do a full race build, gut the car, build the motor, pretty much do your own r and d and find a good tuner. But at that point why not just buy something else, maybe something domestic with a LS and some twin turbos smacked on lmao

 

Your in the wrong car if you think a map will give 100's of bhp and secs off 0-60, 1/4 mile times.

 

Dragy, the current standard for verified 3D accuracy, has a VAP tuned 2016 R at 2.86 seconds and 11.07 seconds on relatively inexpensive MP4S tires. Unfortunately, he used an old software version that doesn't record the DA.

For any DA, that's not slow. It's 0.5 seconds faster 0-60 and 0.2 seconds faster in the 1320 than a stock 760 HP 2020 Shelby GT500 at SL, and also cheaper considering the price of lingering new Rs are often listed in the high $70Ks/low $80Ks on autotrader and GT500's reach into the $100Ks. Not that you can compare a Mustang to a Jag in any way other than seconds, but it shows what Rs do with a mild tune.

Other similar cars on Dragy include the fastest ~$130K 2019 C7 ZR1 run at 2.80/10.86.

Stock ~$185K Porsche 911 Turbo S at 2.84/10.81.

Stock ~$295K Porsche GT2RS at 2.90/10.58.

Stock ~$150K Porsche GT3 at 3.5/11.5 (unverified, likely optimistic)

Stock ~$365K 790 HP Ferrari 812 Superfast at 2.98/10.63.

Stock ~$275K 562 HP Ferrari 458 Italia at 3.55/11.67.

Stock ~$325K 710 HP McLaren 720S at 2.86/10.40 (ok, the 1/4 isn't too close)

Tuned (owner comment says 768 WHP dyno) Charger Hellcat Redeye at 3.68/11.62.

Theres my own very tunable BMW 135i E88 w/FBO Meth JB4 tuned from 300 HP to 420 HP (360 WHP) at 4.90 seconds. I'm afraid a 1320 run would result in a tow but expect high 12s.

And a not verified by Dragy, so likely optimistic or they would have uploaded it, Edmunds tested 495 HP 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray Z51 at 3.3/11.2.

Do you post on TGP as Racer X?

 

Go get a custom tune, the car is supported by hp tuners. Just go find a tuner you trust.
