Default Brake dust hell

I’m only a few weeks into ownership of my 2017 V6S vert. I love this car and have very few issues with it. Except for the unbelievable amount of brake dust that so quickly accumulates on my 20” wheels - especially the front. I thought the Vette (which I traded in for the F-Type) had a lot of brake dust. But this is unbelievable.
So I’ve read many of the threads discussing this issue and ways to help or to switch to ceramic. Afterwards I’m still confused as to the options. Can anyone tell me the bottom line on making the switch? Are there not good aftermarket options that don’t cost a fortune? I made the switch to ceramics on my Vette and it made a Huge difference while costing less than $1,000 if I remember right, for pads, rotors, and labor. What is the issue with doing the same for the F-Type?
At this point I’m using the Outlast brake dust repellent spray which helps a little, but I certainly wouldn’t say it actually “repels” the dust - more like makes a bit easier to clean off.

Post 85 to see dust difference.

You can buy these pads from Velocity AP. They work miracles relative to dust and have good street performance but they are not good if you plan to track your car.

I put the Porterfield pads on 3 weeks ago and I still haven't had to dust the wheels! I also did a slight rotor upgrade and am very happy with the switch! Not cheap but very satisfying.

Also on porterfields - not perfect, but way better than factory.

Not perfect? As in dust or or braking? Except for the dust problem, I like the stock pads for around town. Do you have to apply more pressure to the Porterfields?
I'm tired of the dust. I was considering the Porterfields or EBC.

Braking feels great, no issues there but the dust reduction is not as dramatic as some claim. I don’t drive the car hard and rarely get on the brakes hard. Maybe I’m more picky about what is clean, but I live in a flat area and I couldn’t imagine going 2-300 miles without any dust unless I drove continuously for that distance and only stopped when I arrived somewhere. That said, the performance seems great and there are zero noise. I also have my wheels and calipers ceramic coated so they do clean up pretty easy.

Thanks gg2684, I guess I'll give the EBC red pads a try. I'm tired of cleaning the dust from my wheels. They dust up even if I drive like an older "old man" than I am.

Thanks for the info - just ordered them! I'm assuming I don't need to get new rotors at 18k miles. Hopefully the local dealership will agree to do the install.

Why go to a dealership and pay a fortune?
Very easy to DIY if you are even vaguely handy with the spanners, and if not any competent workshop can do it for way less than a JLR dealership will charge.
At 18k miles the rotors should be barely worn, on almost all modern Jags the rotors last for at least two sets of fully worn pads.

If it's that easy I might give it a try. Except I don't know what a spanner is - lol.

Another vote for the Porterfield CF pads. I have run them for several years on my XJR with great results. Mainly changed because of the brake dust caused by the factory pads.

My dealer was fine installing the Porterfield pads along with the OEM rotors. The Porterfields feel a bit different than the OEM pads, but you’ll get used to them. Definitely less dust.

Spanner = wrench.

I thought that the wisdom here was to replace the rotors EVERY OTHER set of pads.

A GOOD shop would measure rotor thickness with a caliper. I do, on ALL my cars...as a result I save $$

With the lip the rotors develop a micrometer would be a more appropriate measurement device. Back in my formative years when I worked at a repair garage that is what I used - and it wasn't even digital!

I discovered exactly this when I replaced pads and rotors. A quick measurement with calipers showed I still had decent rotor thickness - until I realized there was a significant lip, and that was what I was measuring.

I use shims of a known thickness to allow for the lip.

On our dailys the Rusty Ridge of road salt corrosion needs to be allowed for, too.

But, but, then you would need to use maths! My head it burns.

Just joking of course.

Note: The dealer may allege you need to automatically replace the rotors when you replace the pads. Don't fall for it.
