I live in a state that has been benefited from the small business migration, but it is not as big as you might think. It's nice to get theses 25-50 person business that are not gaming . I got an incredable education form a Calif state university and the number of higher education opportunities is not matched by any state. We have homeless in Vegas and you should see Hawaii. With the economy better we are finally addressing the situation. People love living in SoCal and in the Bay area, only income keeps them away.I like living in Vegas (46 years) but give me Newport or Manhattan Beach or even Honolulu in a minute.

Good question, Where is the money coming from? It wont be coming from the new gas and high car registration fee's. The money is never used for what we the Tax Payers were told it would go for. It will go to saving the darter snails and fund the Government pensions, the politicians pay raises, etc, but none of it will go to the roads. Never has, never will in this state. Remember Gray Davis? he got thrown out of office for raising the car registration fees to what they are now. My how attitudes have changed.
If your commute was improved immediately, this was a project long funded before the new taxes.

Fair enough. I contend this thread is at odds with that goal ab initio. I've bitten my tongue on a reply and will move on.

I'm surprised at OP's reg costs. I'm also in the Los Angeles area on the Westside and my registration (due this week actually) for my '15 R came out to just a hair over 600 bucks - about what I was expecting.

See, now this is the sort of thing that is so crazy - how can the same vehicle/same year registered in almost the same month in the same county have a vastly different registration amount? I have no idea how to challenge this with the DMV and can only guess as to the number of hours and phone calls it would take to get a response from them.

I dont know if each county can add there own up charge or not. I think a lot depends on what you paid for your car and the rate of depreciation. For Example: The dealer left the original owners registration in the glove box of my car when I bought it. I bought a CPO off lease car. The original owner lived up by Sacramento, He paid over 650 for the year 2018, I bought the car 5 months after he paid the tax. When I paid the tax on the car this year I paid about 300 dollars less, that is in just 1 year. The car value must have reset when I bought the car. So what that tells me is the rate of depreciation by the state is way low as compared to the real world.

Something fishy regarding the lack of depreciation - they are charging tax based on a value at least as high as I paid for the car three years ago.

Here's a wild thought: instead of increasing taxes to pay for road repairs, how about you just trim your budget properly? California apologists love to tout that its one of the biggest economies in the world, but what good is that if the state is always begging for more money?

$2 billion and several years spent adding a single carpool lane to the 405 and it made traffic worse. Now we have people criss-crossing the freeway trying to get to the HOV lane and the offramps, which in turn slows down the entire flow of traffic. How is it that a simpleton like myself can foresee this but not the government consultants and muckety-mucks? They demolished/rebuilt entire bridges and cut away huge portions of the surrounding hills...all for a stupid HOV lane that made things worse! And then just look at how the high speed rail project was handled. I don't trust this city or state with any type of public works project and throwing more tax money at our problems is a huge scam that voters fall for every single time.

However, I was pleasantly amazed when the proposed property tax hike was shot down. I couldn't believe it! So maybe there is hope that people are wising up.
