Default Caution: Paddle shifters aren't flashers.

I was driving in manual shift mode with open exhaust and encountered a left-lane hog. I flashed him to indicate my desire to pass (Not that he'd understand) But, without thinking, I had my fingers on the paddle instead of the turn-signal.
I managed a multiple downshift that scared the crap out of me and the left-lane hog. Effective but not recommended.

Seems effective, yet more exciting than you planned with a simple headlight flash.
Left lane hogs are a big problem around here as well. I didn't experience this when I lived in Europe, or at least not as much, likely because they have realistic speed limits...

I'm here in DFW and not sure that many of the knuckleheads who slow-drive in the left would understand the flash-to-pass signal. I'll definitely give you the chance to pass if you can catch me

Can you not pass on the right on most multi-lane roads?

If the answer is no, I'm lucky to have avoided a ticket in DFW...

It's done all of the time in Calif. I do it a lot and no repercussions..most times it's just necessary to do so.

You aren't really supposed to, but many people freely pass on the right. Depends a bit on where you are in the country, driving norms vary.

In TX if you don't pass on the right you'll die of old age sitting behind the cell-phone/texting drivers and ladies who think the "L"-lane stands for "Ladies".

I believe its illegal here as well, but everyone does it. According to what I've read on the topic (some university did a detailed study of collisions) the speed differential is what causes many accidents as opposed to pure speed.
The upshot was that we get someone driving at the speed limit (which in our case is really slow) in the left lane who thinks, I'm doing the limit, so I'm ok in the left lane. Meanwhile the traffic often moves at 20km faster and thus people have to switch lanes by passing on the right which is apparently a bit more dangerous than passing on the left due to visibility etc...
I have seen frustrated drivers flash lights and lean on the horn behind left lane hogs which is kinda fun when you see the shocked reaction of the person hogging the left.
When I lived in Europe, you would get driven off the road if you sat in the passing lane... and the police would also move you over.
Lawrence.
