I'm looking to take my dog (weimaraner) with me on some drives. He's only about 30 lbs now (all legs) and will probably top out at about 90 lbs when full grown. What are people using to haul dogs in their convertibles? Most options I've seen for front seats are for small breeds.

 

Best buy a Subaru for your Weimaraner... I have a Vizsla and I bought her an Outback. All you need is for your "little" puppy to see a squirrel on the side of the road and you would be hard pressed to keep him in the car.

 

I've trained my Golden Retriever (100 lbs or so) to either curl up in the passenger footwell or sit on the seat (like the gentleman that he is).

Given the choice he typically defaults to the footwell.

He gets very excited when I take him to the car, because that usually means dog park 😃

 

I have a 4 pound Yorkie and wouldn't take her in my F-Type. That's what my older Nissan is for, lol.

 

Good to hear. In my mind, the footwell would work well.

 

Remember, you have a Weimaraner....very much like a Vizela, way different than a Retriever or a Lab. Well trained they can be. Just like mine is, except, and a very huge except it is, when those in-bred hormones kick in for whatever reason and your leather seat and perhaps dash may have to pay a high price. Just a kind word of caution and hopefully you will not ask me why as I have tried to forget and forgive.

 

This is my third Weimaraner. Everything you are saying is true, they are high energy and difficult to train.

 

We have two Weimaraners in our family. So putting them in the F-type is not an option. Although we have a back seat car cover and harness' in the back of our RR Autobiography that they gladly will use while taking them to the beach or vet. I believe the harness' are made by kong and clip via carabiner to straps attached to seatbelt mounting points. This system works very well and keeps everyone safe if an accident should occur. A similar system could be used on the F-type as long as a seat cover is used to protect the leather surfaces. While harnessed the dogs just curl up and sleep until the destination is reached.

 

I took various dogs for rides in my TR8’s. I never felt I was driving my best because I was too worried they’d do something crazy like decide they needed to be on my lap.

I did take my 90 pound Pitt/Sheppard to the vet in the Type coupe. Towel covering leather. I don’t think either of up enjoyed the ride.



Lot easier to put the seats down in a Pace and have them back there.

Even my dog knows to hold on…and to keep her eyes on the road.

 

Yep, dog restraint harnesses is what we used. Dog can still jump up towards dash etc, but can't exit the car or go flying if you stop too suddenly.

Solution version 1.1. Dog seat/booster on top of some foam and a thick blanket with a harness attached to the seat belt. Worked well for a four hour drive. I'll be working with foam and some other material to make a better, more customized version.

 

Attached picture of friends with my dog’s sister, in their 911. He removed the rear pseudo seats and put down a blanket for her. And she has a harness. We haven’t taken our dog in our new to us XKR ‘vert…because she had a hot spot that wouldn’t go away and she had to wear the cone of shame. But, our dog loves riding in our Acura MDX, and expect she’ll like the XKR with the top down.

I was reminded of this thread by an email I got from Covercraft this morning (I bought a cover from them). They make a variety of seat covers designed for dogs.

 

110lbs Labrador Retriever. Seat cover and a harness connected to the seat and the seat belt. Works great, he can curl up and put his head on the center console or he sits up to look around. No scratches but occasionally a little drooling
