Default Door

24f this morning. Unlocked the car and opened the drivers door. Handle felt.......different.

Got in car and drivers door would not completely latch. Non-optimal drive to work.

Got to work and inner door handle would not latch. Car door is now locked, but not able to be opened from either the inside or outside of car.

Cold, but no rain/snow.

Thoughts?

Sounds like it is frozen. Get it to someplace warm if possible. After it thaws apply some lock lubricant to the door lock.

If you can't get it to someplace warm you may need to wait until the temperature goes up until you apply the lock lube.

Oddly enough went out just now (36 degrees) and all is good.

What parts actually get frozen? If there's no moisture, what is there to freeze?

Here are a few guesses on possible moisture sources. Dew. Does the car sit out? Also dirt holds moisture. If there is any dirt around or in the lock mechanism that could be the source as well. I can't venture specific guesses as to exactly what parts might freeze.

I would recommend getting out your emergency key in the key fob and adding some lock lube in the keyhole where it goes and lock and unlock it a few times. Then open the door and note any parts that move when you turn the key and lube those as well.

Wipe the key off before you put it back. There will likely be some lock lube on it after you remove it from the lock.

I noticed from your profile you have an XF. You posted your question in the F-Type forum. You may want to repost your issue in the XF forum. The issue may be specific to the XF.

If it's the old "can't open the door when it's freezing cold" issue it's common to most, if not all, Jaguars. Three of the four I've had have exhibited this problem, though not the F-Type so far as I've not tried to use it in such conditions.

Profile updated.

I've had two XFs that did not exhibit this problem.

@SCM any suggestions for a long term fix other than the previous suggestions?

Some have suggested using Gummi Pflege on the seals to try to mitigate the sticking, though that won't address the lock freezing situation. Another side effect I've noticed is the mirrors sometimes won't unfold, which wasn't a problem in my previous XKR as I could disable the auto-fold, but that's become a dealer-only setting in the F-Type.
