Default X-Type 2005 OSF outside door handle not working

Please help. I've followed a post from on here and I'm still very stuck with my door mechanism. The outside driver's door handle does nothing to open the door. I have looked inside and it looks like I've maybe got a rod and clip missing but the back of the mechanism doesn't appear to have anything for a rod to clip in to. Any advice is welcome.
Rear side of door mechanism

Latch mechanism from inside left

Underside of area directly above door mechanism

A couple of weeks ago, during a bit of what passes for cold weather on this island in the Pacific - in other words the temps were around 5 degrees C - the passenger door handle on my 2002 X-Type exhibited exactly this behaviour - pulling the outside handle resulted in....nothing. Last week, the same thing happened with the driver's side handle, also on a cold day. In both cases, the remedy was simple: some lock lubricant sprayed on the door latch itself (of course, this fix required the door to be open). I worked the latch lever with a screwdriver several times, and then with the interior and exterior handles. Fixed! It sounds unlikely, I agree. But that is what happened.
The lubricant I used is a Canadian product called RustCheck - primarily a rust inhibitor but it is also the BEST lubricant I have found for door locks or any other similar use.

Thank you, I'll try that today and update later on. Its pizza night tonight and so dough and sauce take priority over cars until they are prepared!

No update yet, I'm afraid. The wife has taken ill and I'm even worse at running a household than I am at fixing cars, it seems! It needs to be done though and when it is, I promise I'm the type to update the group. I'm thinking a micro switch of some kind because I can't see ANY link rods or even clips where they could have fallen from. No rods at the bottom of the door itself and no holes for clips. Is it possible that my door was designed with no rod for the outside handle??

Does it act the same way whether using the key or the fob?

Does the key turn the full distance in the lock, both ways, without binding or dragging?

The electric lock can get dirty, corroded or have bad connections. If the problem is with the key, you may have mechanical issues.

I am sorry that your wife is ill. When you are able to address the door handle problem please try what I suggested (lubricating the latch itself - see my earlier posting above); yes, it sounds illogical. But I have twice had exactly the non-functional handle situation you describe, fixed easily by simple lubrication and manual exercising of the latch on the door end panel. The simplest solution is often the best and most effective.

You wouldn't believe it but the lubrication advice is the winner of the day! I initially used WD40 but this didn't seem to do much and so I squirted, more than was probably required, silicone spray in to the latch itself and worked for about 10 minutes. Problem cured! Thank you for the advice and now the car is booked for an MOT on Friday.

Well, yes, *I* believe it….a prophet in his own land…..sigh….

Very, very often the simplest and easiest answer in the correct one…Always try the least invasive procedure first!

(just one thing: WD40 is not a lubricant. It leaves no residual protection).
