Hi everyone, my v6s lost power the other day and the engine started making a horrific noise. The jaguar dealer in Spain says i need a new engine, the only specialist i could find in Barcelona wouldn’t touch it and directed me to the dealer - I suspect both just didn’t want to deal with an engine repair. Are they right? Do I need a replacement, or should I continue to make enquiries, perhaps outside of Spain? Thanks!
Did they take the engine apart and if so, what did they find?
Did you look into buying a used engine, as the v6 has not been made in a few years.
The more information you give, the better the answers you will get.
Thanks for the reply. I paid the dealer 800 euros for a diagnosis. They did not take the engine apart but they removed the oil filter and found metal bits in it. And promptly sent over a quotation for a new engine.
I do love the car and intend to get it back on the road again, but I’d like to understand my realistic options instead of leaping straight to a new engine.

LOL, typical dealer move.
If it is a timing chain, engine can probably be rebuilt. But you have to remove the timing cover to verify, best bet would be to find a mechanic to rebuild or bite the bullet and get a used one.
If you get a used one, DEFINITELY have it rebuilt before installing..
I think so too, you might have lost a rod bearing. If so I had the same issue. I rebuilded my V6.
Mine needed a new rod, bearings and a crank regrind. Parts costs and labour were less then €1000. But time I spend……
It is now a very happy engine. The root cause was low oil, caused by a leaking vacuum pump gasket.
Sorry for your loss 😔 I had the identical situation back in April when the engine had done only 34K miles and had had the oil changed every 4K miles. How many miles has your done? It's very rare for a rod bearing to go but that's that happened to you as well.
I had a new remanufactured engine from JLR put in and paid mostly by the insurance (£17K). The only used part was the oil sump. Everything else was brand new. It came with a 2 year warranty unlimited mileage from factory. The job was done by my local specialist who also upgraded all cooling pipes at the same time.
JLR does not supply parts for their engines meaning it's impossible to guarantee the reliability of any engine rebuilt by anyone other than JLR. A job well done today might not be replicated tomorrow due to changes in tolerances, etc. Parts used by engine rebuilders are mostly made in China. Also, there is no way to guarantee that you'll be able to remove that much metal shavings from the engine.
