I can understand the V8 owners getting a little hot under the collar that this one is badged "R Dynamic" - not sure how they spun that one in marketing....

As PetrolPed in his YouTube video stated, as far as the cabin etc, it's not a cheapened out Jaguar F, all the same switchgear and fittings are present. He found it agile and responsive to drive claiming it was "more pointy at the front" than its siblings. The exhaust didn't have the same presence but did crackle and pop. Did I he prefer it to the SVR and V6 ? No, he said it wasn't for him but that doesn't invalidate it as a potential market. With economics today, anything that allows Jaguar to sell more units should be a good thing. At 50K GBP in England, it's still not a "cheap" car.
JLR has form in this area. About three years ago for the ROW market they released a variant of the XF badged as an "R-Sport".
It was a basic 2.2 or 3.0 diesel with some tizzy up add-ons.
Those of us who had an XFR at the time were not too impressed with this!

Volvo did the same thing. Back in 2004 I had an s60R which was an absolute beast for a sedan at the time, and cost a bomb.

Then a few years later the Rs were discontinued by volvo's but they started a spec of "r-sport" and threw the instrument cluster from the R into it and attached a few plastic bits to the sills and bumper, which impressed me not at all, until I got my wife a s40T5 in that spec.

Ah yes forgot about that. It was quite interesting seeing the XF"R" owners wondering why their car didn't have some of the expected XFR options, like torque and horsepower ;-)

The thing about gas mileage isnt the price of the gasoline.

If you are going on a holiday to the Alps in your BMW m6 that gives 8mpg, on a 15gallon tank, you find yourself stopping every 2 hours to fuel up. While you watch the minivan you worked so hard to pass, go by you every 2 hours.

Some would say this is the German sense of humour.

If I ever see a 4 banger in the wild and happen to pull up next to it at the lights, the temptation to slip it in neutral and blip some barks and pops out will be quite high

I would not do that mate.
That's like bragging to the man using the urinal next to you, how cold the water is.
Your moment of climax should be in pretending you have the lesser car. All while not robbing him of his joy.

The riposte to that is: "Ah, yes, the water is cold. But it is not very deep." Usually, this classic joke is told while standing on a bridge over the river.

You may, but if you're in the V6 make sure you're in front as the small 4 pot will leave you wanting on the bending roads

First post. Twenty years of air-cooled 911 ownership and now looking at buying an F-type. As mentioned by some, the taxes and price differences in a few countries are quite important which could justify buying the 2.0. I took an extended testdrive yesterday with a V6 AWD. Fantastic car, very neutral handling and great sound although I didn't find it very prominent. Definitely a gran turismo and less nimble than the 911. Little impression of speed too but also very comfortable, same level of comfrt as in my current DD (Audi V6 TDI Quattro). I will buy one but I need to testdrive the 2.0 first. From what I've seen and heard it really sounds quite ok. It might not sound very potent when revved at idle but otherwise it's just fine. I also work shifts so leaving the house at 5 am or arriving back home at 01 am might be a bit of an issue with the neighbours. I've gathered two clips which on the one hand provide some good quality engine sound ( starting at 1:50, would like to hear what is wrong with that sound ) and on the other hand an opinion out of South-Africa.

Today I had the chance to testdrive the 2.0. I'll admit that my expectations were on the low side but I was pleasantly surprised by a well balanced and very driveable car. On start-up the sound is indeed more modest when compared to the V6 but that isn't a bad thing under some circumstances. Once on the road it sounds very, very decent. I was together with my 19 year old son and he too thought it sounded mighty well. It doesn't have the characteristic sound of the V6 but it's really a very good sounding car at least from the inside, overall more discrete but still a very distinct sound. A very convincing experience, I now just have to decide what color I want.

I finally took a ride in a 4 banger, not all that terrible stop lite to stop lite, reminded me of my Audi TT. That said I would not get this instesd of V6S, I like the power, LSD, active suspension too much. I would get a loaded CPO V6S instesd, probably for even less!

As i said time and time again, love it can't fault the car, have driven the V6 and not much difference in performance V6 340 that is, right it hasn't the big pops and cracles, well mine has since i did a exhaust upgrade. It handles better IMO, went from a 500hp xkr to the 4 pot and it hasn't the big power but enough on the irish roads and the tax/vrt that we have ment the V6 version was around €35,000 in the difference, i kid you not. It looks the part, drives brilliant, low C02 tax for me and above all gives you a smile every time i drive it, O ya and i have the bangs and pops.

Most important is the price : if the difference is small, or you have plenty cash, go for the V6 or even V8...
If it would cost 40% more to buy a V6 and the V8 is 'fantasy-island' for you -like for me- , then it will not disappoint you..

That's the bottom line..

Never appreciated the bangs and pops myself. Always thought the V6 and V8 were somewhat unfulfilling when it came to sheer power. Drove the V8 but made me crave for a V12. Bought the 2.0 last month and love it. Subdued sound (going well with subdued BRG) and, most importantly, better handling because of the much lighter front.

@Fleer.

Why not an I-pace then ? No noises and no weight in front...

Good point, Dan.
In fact I do like to hear something, preferably a low petrol drone, knowing the engine is there. Strangely enough, I do appreciate the Aston Vantage V12, but didn’t like the F-Type’s V6 that much, or even the V8, as both sounded too sharp and pitched for me, if that makes sense. I’m not enough of an engine enthusiast, I’m afraid.

Actually I'm with you. My first XF (4.2) had a paramount exhaust and the engine note was amazingly good. Bassy, throbby but clear and very loud, very much like the Aston. Ever since I've been a bit disappointed with the notes (had the 5.0. and the 5.0SC, now the V6S), though I like the V6S a lot more than the 5.0.

I have a jag drive day next week, hopefully I get to track the f type 4 potter so then I will have tracked all engines in it.

Hi Bruce, this might be the change I asked for months ago and I got splattered with data and statements...

Simple request : try to find a P300e a V6 [or a 340 & 380..] and a V8, any V8..

My car has "launch control" , I don't know if that was already available on earlier cars...

After warming up, maybe you can go to a vacant industrial estate and do a timed distance of just dragrace,
see who gets to 60mph first...
