Default Found myself in neutral while driving.

This has happened a couple of times now in my automatic F Type. I've pulled away from traffic lights, braked and then put my foot back on the accelerator, only to find that the car is now in neutral. Cue loud engine revving noise and a lack of acceleration.

Maybe I've accidentally knocked the stick and changed the selection myself, but as you have to hold down the trigger to make this change I think that's unlikely.

Anyone else experienced or heard of a similar issue?

First time I've seen this kind of problem mentioned. Recreate the scenario on a quiet side road and take careful note of what you do.
It may help in the solution.

Is it accompaniesd by a message on the instrument cluster saying something like "Reapply gear"?

jimbov8 - It's happened twice about a month apart so not sure if I can recreate the issue at will. I'll have a try though.

xdave - With cars baring down on me from behind both times, I was too flustered to look at the instrument panel when it happened. I'll look out for any messages if it happens again.

The reason I asked that was because if the driver door is open (or the car thinks it is, e.g. a faulty contact) the car will take itself out of gear and display the symptom you describe along with that message in the instrument cluster and I believe there is a error tone too. I know it does this when stationary (engine on, door open), but maybe it does it when moving too? I've never opened the door while moving to test that.

i don't think you have to pull the trigger to push the gear selector to neutral, but when in neutral you have to pull the trigger to get it to P or back to gear.

maybe similar problem as mentioned in service bulletin

JTB00415V3

"Transmission Defaulting To Neutral When Coming To A Stop
A customer may express a concern that the transmission defaults into neutral when the vehicle comes to a stop with ECO stop-start active. The gear display will be flashing on the instrument cluster and on the transmission control switch."

TCM has to be reconfigured via SDD .

When driving the first few times, I did this myself. It was all user error. Im not exactly sure what I did, but I remember thinking I was in sport mode, and wasn't. When I shifted gears I went into Neutral. Not certain if you have to press the button, but I don't think so to select N.

Pay extra special attention if you're in Sport or not...

I had a good go at recreating the issue yesterday but haven't been able to. I'll concede the first time could have been user error but I'm pretty certain I didn't touch the gear stick in any way the second time. Will wait to see if it happens again. Thanks for the suggestions all.

I have a 2001 XKR that has begun randomly shifting into neutral while I'm driving. If I stop, shift into park, then shift back into gear the problem goes away (at least so far). Also, I've never had the issue more than once during any particular drive. I haven't seen any messages, nor have I accidentally bumped the shift lever. It's a bit unsettling!
