Default Help with oil type please

Sorry if this appears twice _ I think I accidentally posted it in the XF forum. Don't know how, but I am old and grey!

I've noticed that before I collected my car (V6 S) it had an oil change and semi synthetic was put in. The handbook says to use Castrol Edge fully synthetic. If I need to top the oil up, is it OK to add fully synthetic to the current semi synthetic?
Also, at oil change time, is it ok to simply drain the semi and put in fully synthetic? I've heard oil flushing isn't advised
Thanks for any advice

Who did the oil change? A Jaguar dealer?

Dump the oil and put in the correct oil. Then you have no worries and just enjoy the car.

Don't think it was a jaguar dealer as such. As I say, I saw it on the records but it was done before I picked the car up.

You may add synth to the semi-synth. No worries.

What you SHOULD know about the Jag-spec oil, is that while it is thin (0W-20), it is supposed to have additives that reduce wear in the engine and timing chain when the engine is driven 'in a sporting manner'.

So let your conscience be your guide. I'd dump the oil and put 'new' in.

One member here promotes changing the oil TWICE at each Oil Change Interval because of the 'leftover' oil that cannot be drained...

Thanks for the info carbuff. Good to know I can mix oils if necessary. Can't drive it much at the moment, but when restrictions ease I'll do a change

I concur with Carbuff: Synthetic and semi synthetic oils are miscible. However, the semi synthetic oil is totally inadequate to protect your engine. Exchange it with the correct spec oil as soon as possible. Flushing the engine on a low mileage engine is unnecessary and double changing the oil is excessive.

So, after your very helpful advice, my car is now booked in for an oil and filter change next wednesday, about 100 miles after the last (wrong) one!

Thanks again all,

Malcolm

For the most part is everyone sticking with 0W-20? And if so, Castrol seems difficult to find but I have found LiquidMoly in that weight and I used LiquidMoly in my Porsche's for years. Would that suffice?

LiquidMoly is good, that is a Jag-spec oil if I'm not mistaken.

I've been using 5W-20. Our '14 says that on the oil fill cap. (Yes, I know that the weight was back-dated to 0W.)

Yes...LiquiMoly has the Jag Spec approved oil. It appears to be very good oil, and reasonably priced.

Isn't the current JLR specification for ILSAC GF6? The Liqui Moly Special Tec is GF5 as far as I could find.

CANCEL THIS:I see that both the Motul and the Liqui Moly meet the Jaguar Land Rover specification 51.5122. Both seem easier to find than the dealer-only Castrol Edge Professional 0w20.

So, oil change done. The Jaguar advice was to use Mobil 1 ESP 0W-20 full synth.

Garage did it for me, and when I collected the car, they gave me the left over oil. On the bottle, it had all the above labelling, but ended with "DexosD Diesel"

Quick heart attack, but phoned a very helpful guy at Mobil technical department. He checked the spec, and said it's the correct spec. The "DexosD Diesel" is a GM think for their market, to show it's good for diesels, but it's the same oil as the Mobil 1 ESP X2 which doesn't have diesel written on it. It's the correct 51.5122

Slightly clearer wording on the label would be helpful I feel.
